"Album reviews"

Breezy and full of the kind of freshness that renders a radio signal radioactive, Dublin debutante Alice Jago knows a thing or two about life’s minor chords. For starters, Jago has her fair share of neat rhyming couplets and louche-limbed melodies peeping out from under a look that’s gazing decidedly askance at the world. Folk-fuelled arrangements, including banjo and bouzouki, call to mind The Be Good Tanyas on Cotton on Girl , but the wistful guitar lines of the closer, Lullaby , whisper of a kinship with the more left-field musings of Joanna Newsom. Truth is that, despite Jago’s

Lisa Hannigan-esque quirky articulation, she’s a songwriter distinctly in control of her own voice – and it’s one that intimates sweet secrets well worthy of the listener’s cocked ear. A spirit-stirring debut. See alicejago.com *** - IRISH TIMES

"DUBLIN SINGER-SONGWRITER OPENS HER ACCOUNT WITH EXQUISITE DEBUT. ...The sound is bucolic roots rock not a million miles from Neil's Harvest,a breezier Gillian Welch ,a folkier Rickie Lee Jones,a touch of the Dusty on the vocal. And Jago can sell a song in the subtlest and slyest of ways. .. like they were written 200 years ago,and may well be written again 200 years from now.Jago also seems to have an instinct for just the right modulation required to lift a song out of merit into distinction. She does waltzes, she does shuffles, she does winsome and wistful and exasperated and lovelorn, often within the same verse. Beautifully produced ..concieved and nurtured.Sample the exquisite swing of 'New St South',or the tired-and-emotional slowdance of 'Warrior',or the dusky jazz of 'Sea Song',or the Goodnight Moon beauty of 'Lullaby', her finest and most fragile vocal.Alice Jago is a girl you don't hear everyday.4/5

ALICE JAGO BIOGRAPHY

Brought up in a house where Elvis was king and Johnny Cash ruled, a childhood listening to a selection of her music-loving father,s favorites,Americana Roots n' Blues to Country- Folk and Soul classics .She fed her love for musical instruments playing everything from drums to trumpet and French horn in the local marching band.

Alice Jago set off firstly to a lakeside log cabin in Virginia, County Cavan and then on to a house in Hollywood, County Wicklow to record the album. The log cabin was chosen to encapsulate a warm full sound and to record it more as a live band session.Born Stubborn features a host of Irish musical talents. Binzer Brennan appears on drums, Karl Odlum on bass, backing vocals, electric guitar, percussion and bouzouki, Paul Moore on Double Bass (he has played with Riverdance, Mark Knopfler and Paul Brady and former Music Director with Van Morrison), Jack Maher on slide guitar, banjo and backing vocals, Cormac Curran ( Villagers) on keys and piano, Bill Blackmore on trumpets, flugel horn and French horn, Michelle Mason on cello and Maria Mason (NSO) on violin. The Album was mastered by Tim Martin who has worked with the likes of Andy Irvine ,Paul Brady ,Christy Moore & Sharron Shannon .

The overall theme of the album juxtaposes hope and melancholy.Hope waits with resilience on the sidelines. Hope is stubborn.

'Her crooked, still vocals wrap themselves around ' Born Stubborn' , stretching syllables in unlikely places, and hinting at a talent emerging from its chrysalis with a healthy impatience'-Irish Times

'The title tune is a slow sway with transcendental middle-eight, 'Cotton On Girl' a self-administered slap across the chops stitched with banjo, handclaps and communal choruses. Both feel like they were written 200 years ago,and may well be written again 200 years from now.Jago also seems to have an instinct for just the right modulation required to lift a song out of merit into distinction. She does waltzes, she does shuffles, she does winsome and wistful and exasperated and lovelorn, often within the same verse..Alice Jago is a girl you don't hear everyday.'-Hotpress.
