"Alice Jemima - Heard It On The Radio"

One of our special secrets at Breaking More Waves is Alice Jemima. There’s something graciously pretty about her voice and the simple arrangements of her songs that gets us every time. Here’s a new one from her, but this one is a cover. Heard It On The Radio was the lone original on Interpreting The Masters Vol 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates by The Bird & The Bee, although in the context of the original album it’s quite easy to imagine that it was a cover of the yacht rock maestro’s themselves as it contained all the right pinpoints towards the big hair / big moustache / big hair duo.

So now in a twist to the tale Alice turns Heard It On The Radio into a cover, stripping the song right back and ditching her trademark vintage guitar sounds for beats and gentle warm synth sounds. What was that saying? Ah yes, simple, but effective.

Having played summer shows at Knee Deep Festival and Wychwood Festival we’re hoping for some winter gigs from Alice to put a little light and warmth into the cold dark nights. - Breaking More Waves

"Alice Jemima - Catapult"

Recorded and produced by Grammy nominated remixer, record producer, song writer and keyboard player Andy Chatterley and Jason Tarver (both of whom worked with Kylie Minogue on her Aphrodite album) Catapult is the all new, all shiny, fully fledged studio output from Breaking More Waves favourite Alice Jemima. A gloriously magical and innocent pop song where the verse, chorus and middle eight all seem as sweetly hooky as each other, there’s an almost old-fashioned succinctness to Catapult. Listen carefully and you might even consider that the sound isn’t that far away from Kate Nash circa Foundations before she went all shouty-indie, with Nina Persson and Alessi Laurent-Marke from Alessi’s Ark on vocals “You don’t know about me do ya do ya,” sings Alice, and we hear the sound of a few hearts beating that little bit quicker.

Press play, look up at the stars in the night sky and discover that sometimes just a sweet, simple tune can make your life a whole lot better. - Breaking More Waves

"Fresh talent: Alice Jemima"

I don't often post music but I have a new love and she's a young folk singer called Alice Jemima. Eighteen years' old and her whole life ahead of her, I can't wait to see what she does next. - Kickcan & Conkers

"Top 5 Tracks of 2011 (Final Post of 2011)"

We’ll leave you with 5 songs that we’ve featured on Breaking More Waves that you could loosely term our tracks of the year. In choosing them we have made no attempt to look back at what we have featured on the blog in case we missed something, but just chosen the songs that have stayed with us all year, and that we'll remember as being very much part of our 2011. We're not saying they're the best, just the ones that made our own personal 2011 a little special.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games
It wasn’t just about hype. The hype wouldn’t have existed if the song wasn’t utterly affecting.

Rizzle Kicks – Down With The Trumpets
Our ‘told you so’ track of the year.

Down With The Trumpets by Rizzle Kicks

Alice Jemima – Red Coat
Holed away somewhere in Devon a virtually unknown young singer songwriter created this effortlessly sweet summery sounding pop song. It was love on first listen.

Alice Jemima - Red Coat (new version)

Nicola Roberts – Beat Of My Drum
In our game of good pop bad pop, this was very very good.

The Milk – All I Wanted Was (Danger)
“Get ready. Press play. Get your dancing shoes on. Brilliant.” That’s what we said of The Milk then. We couldn’t agree more now.

See you in 2012. Over and out.

"What are the Bristol sounds of 2012?"

The Bristol music scene is healthier than ever. From country and folk to pop acts; rock and indie bands to electronica and hip hop artists, there is something for everyone.

With so much talent and creativity there will always be success stories. Previously Bristol has inspired the rise of trip hop, but now the world looks to Bristol for different reasons. Two genres filled the Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra playlists in 2011: drum and bass, and dub step, both of which have roots in the West Country.

But what will 2012 hold? Will Bristol rise on the national music scene? I've selected some of the best local artists from a variety of genres as my top tips for 2012.

You can listen to the programme on the iPlayer or on Radio Bristol every Friday and Saturday evening at 01:00 GMT.

Alice Jemima

Alice Jemima is only 18 years old but she has already notched up a succession of accolades as a solo folk artist.

She's played in front of Lord Sebastian Coe at the unveiling of the Olympic rings in London, won regional competitions, entertained crowds at UK festivals and attracted the attention of national broadcasters and newspapers. - Sam Bonham - BBC Introducing in Bristol

"Music: Alice Jemima"

Alice Jemima is the cutest thing since my girlfriend sent me this picture of her dog in the morning. Everything about her quite beautiful. Her charming sweet folky voice over lightly pressed synths caught my ears when I was looking around on Youtube for this game (who can find the best artist) my friend Lauren and I have been playing for a few weeks now. Check out this three tracks set which features my favorite track by her so far, “Catapult” and two versions of “Red Coat”. Lets all beg her for more tunes! - iheardin

"New Treat"

I went to the Breakout for Music Week gig last night at Camden Proud. I went down to see this lady and also the lovely Peter & Kerry, it was a really nice gig set up. Alice Jemima completely stole the show for me. On stage she has a shyness which is intriguing and when she sings she is sweet, engaging and a delight to behold. I think I was smiling through her whole set.

Alice Jemima’s music is innocent, girlie and charmingly sweet folk-pop. She plays a Hofner guitar and her voice is gentle and fragile. She sings about heartbreak but in an optimistic way. I’d compare her to Lisa Mitchell and also Lucy Rose. She has been working with producer Andy Chatterley who has worked with artists as diverse as Kylie, Kanye and Nerina Pallot. He has built up her tracks from simple guitar/voice tracks to something with a much fuller sound. I think both ways work for her well. Oh, and she’s only 18!

She has some of the loveliest videos I have ever seen and gave out some super cute handmade business cards. You can tell she puts love and care into her brand as an artist which I really like. - Flying With Anna

"Alice Jemima - Who i wanna be / i wont let you down"

Alice Jemima, a young, talented and prolific singer songwriter from Devon has already become one of the more regularly featured artists on Breaking More Waves. Her mellifluous voice and gentle songs have a sense of special intimacy and rare addictive calmness. It’s so easy to imagine Alice sitting round a campfire or on the beach playing these songs to a hushed and mesmerised audience.

Whilst Alice currently has a very low profile at the moment, slowly people are beginning to take notice. Elisa Bray of the Independent newspaper recently featured Alice as one of the new acts to see at the recent Wychwood Festival and noted that she was “First and top of my list.” As we’ve previously mentioned she’s also picked up play on Radio 1 courtesy of Breaking More Waves favourite DJ Rob da Bank as well as Tom Robinson’s Now Playing show on BBC6 Music courtesy of a tip off by this very blog.

So today we’re featuring two new videos that Alice has recently shot for the songs Who I Wanna Be and I Won't Let You Down. Who I Wanna Be is formed like a miniature moving polaroid; there’s something utterly captivating about the way Alice performs in it – completely natural but obviously in love with and consumed by the music she is making. Consider us 100% smitten. - Breaking More Waves

"Alice Jemima - Red Coat"

It’s been a good few weeks since Alice Jemima’s name first appeared on Breaking More Waves, but now she’s back with a new song entitled Red Coat that she’s recorded with Grammy nominated producer Andy Chatterley and Jason Tarver (both of whom worked with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite). Red Coat is a delicately constructed and innocently sweet sounding pop song that takes an alluring step forward from her more folkish and minimalistic work that we’ve previously featured.

Since we introduced Alice she’s received her first Radio 1 play courtesy of our favourite festival organizer / curator and DJ Rob da Bank and has confirmed to play the BBC Introducing Stage at this year’s Wychwood Festival. It’s still very early days for Alice, but we could easily see her fragile and lovely songs placing her as the UK’s answer to the likes of Australia’s Lisa Mitchell or Iceland’s Emilíana Torrini. - Breaking More Waves

"New Waves"

We’re suckers for cute sounding female vocals and sparse simple arrangements, so today we present a new wave that falls firmly into this category. Alice Jemima is a 17 year old singer songwriter from Newton Abbot, Devon, UK, who plays music that will make you go weak at the knees and sigh words like ‘lovely’ and ‘charming’. Alice is still very fresh and a developing artist but there’s something delicate and winsome here that deserves to be allowed to grow.

There’s a similarity between Alice and another artist that we’ve featured a number of times at Breaking More Waves – Misty Miller – in that they are both slightly quirky, girlish and old-fashioned sounding. Both are doing something that is far removed from the grotesque Rihanna styled bumping and grinding that so many teenage girls seem to aspire to and with 10 year old girls signing record deals, wearing designer labels and releasing pop music videos it’s refreshing to see young singers growing their song craft in a more natural and organic way.

Alice’s biggest claim to fame to date is that she was selected as part of the national London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project to help in the unveiling of the Olympic rings at St Pancras international station in London in front of Seb Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee and Mayor of London Boris Johnson. She performed four songs there. We’re not sure how much Lord Coe and Boris Johnson know about music, but if they do they will have noticed the uncanny resemblance to Emilíana Torrini in Alice’s vocal and sense of mature restraint in her songs. Listen to Ain’t It Funny which we’re streaming below and watch the video for Won’t Take You For Granted and you’ll see what we mean. Just simple plucked guitar with minimal violin backing (on Ain’t It Funny) these songs really are quite delightful. - Breaking More Waves
