"Budding Country Voice"

At 17, she daydreams that her lyrics will one day assure listeners “they’re not alone,” the way Bonnie Raitt, Pat Benatar and LeAnn Rimes have done for her.

“I see how their music affects people, and how it can turn their day into a better one,” Ty said. “Lyrically and emotionally, they portray something that’s really cool. It’s definitely helped me get through some stuff.”

So Ty, a Venice High School senior, is nursing her own country career, with a determined eye on the Nashville and New York City scenes.

But first, local exposure. At 6 p.m. today, she will belt out the national anthem at Ed Smith Stadium, before the Sarasota Reds play ball against the Dunedin Blue Jays. A fireworks extravaganza will follow the final inning.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity for me,” Ty said. “I’m so excited to get up in front of those people. It’s such an adrenaline rush for me to be onstage.”

A vocalist since age 10

and a stage performer and songwriter since 14, Ty headlined her first show in 2006 — the Sarasota County Fair — with a cover of Sara Evans’ “A Real Fine Place to Start.” She takes private voice lessons, participates in chorus, has dazzled crowds at area Moose lodges, and even auditioned for “High School Idol,” snagging a spot in the finals.

Ty is currently in the studio with two separate labels, working on a commercial project as well as a new single, “Long Gone,” which is slated for release at the end of summer.

Her demo consists of three of her original tunes and covers of songs by Trisha Yearwood, Miranda Lambert, Alison Krauss and Carrie Underwood.

Post-graduation next June, Ty, with a hand from her dad and manager Colin “C.J.” Tychonski, plans to distribute the CD to prospective backers. Alicia shortened her last name for the stage.

“I’m excited to see what happens,” Ty said. “The great thing about country music is that the fans, once they become fans, are always going to be there. I think it’s because the music really tells a story.”
