The air was filled with catchy guitar rips, fast drum beats and Pat Anstey’s low, intense scream. The band, A Life in Liberty, won the chance to record a six song EP after playing at Beat the Heat, a Christian concert held in Lewisporte during the Mussel Bed Soiree.

The metal band is made up of six musicians who hail from the St. John’s area. Their new EP is finished and will be available on October 9.

Steve Bonnell, the keyboardist for A Life in Liberty, said that the whole band was really excited when they found out that they had won the opportunity to record their own EP.

“We thought that it could be the thing that leads to something bigger and starts our lives as musicians.”

The band members spent time going between St. John's and Lewisporte, where they recorded the album with Bull Dog Recording Studio.

During the recording process, Bonnell said came to realize that there was a lot more for him to learn.

“When the gear was all out, I realized it took more than just knowing how to play music to make it,” he said.

A Life in Liberty’s new album is called Alethea - a Greek female name that means “truth.”

“We named the EP Alethea because it talks about everything we stand for, which includes being faithful and pure throughout our lives," said Bonnell.

A Life in Liberty hopes to make it big in the future. For the band members, playing music isn’t just a high-school phase.

The band has high hopes for their career in music. They hope to play at big Christian events such as Cornerstone, Overflow and Kingdom Bound.

“We’re going to continue this if it’s what God wants us to do,” said Steve. “That’s what we all do. And right now, we feel that He wants us to continue this.”

Steve says that fans should look forward to more intricate and in-depth sounds in their new album, Alethea

ALIL is a Christian/Metalcore band who have nothing but passion for their music. As a band, they are slowly but surely making a name for themselves.
The band was formerly called Cast the Image and included three of the members that are in ALIL today. Members came and went until Pat and Evan joined. The band determined that this would be the final line-up so they started off on a new foot; re-writing material, writing new material, and taking their creativity to a whole new level. After the compilation of these members, the band decided to change to their name to A Life In Liberty.
Since then, ALIL has been playing loads of local shows, reaching out to the Newfoundland scene. The band hopes to be nothing but a christian band in a non-christian scene. A light in the darkness. www.myspace.com/alifeinliberty
