"TALLINN MUSIC WEEK 2013"

It turns out that two of the labels on everyone’s lips really are packaging things neatly. Latvia’s I Love You Records – whose standout artist for me was singer-songwriter Alise Joste, and Finland’s Fonal Records, who presented Lau Nau, amongst others such as Barry Andrewsin Disko. Both had showcase evenings and some of you will know a few of these artists I’m sure.

Favourite artists: Sibyl Vane (Estonia), I Wear* Experiment (Estonia), Shiny Darkly (Denmark) and Alise Joste (Latvia) and yes, probably Odd Hugo too. - Baltic Sub Blog

"Eight New and Lyrical Voices from the Tallinn Music Week 2013"

Continuing that same acoustic lyricism is the new figure of Alise Joste from neighboring Latvia. The fact that she published a debut album in 2011 with the help of her brother says volumes about the overarching, minor scale of her dossier. Last year, however, she performed her quiet songs outside of Latvia for the first time, specifically in France. Any promotional materials have simply served to underscore an elegant minorism: "I consider myself a pretty shy individual, so I've always found it hard to talk about my experiences, thoughts, or feelings. For a long time, I kept those things to myself. Unexpectedly, I discovered that songwriting was the one way - finally - I could speak both to myself and others with [complete] honesty." - Far From Moscow

"Alise Joste - Alise Joste"

Alise Joste is a young Latvian artist and this is her first recording. She has a lovely angelic voice, so sweet and very moving. The acoustic music is enchanting. This cd contains twelve pearls of a rare quality. It's the ideal soundtrack for a cold winter, listening to it whilst sitting close to the heating or under a comfy blanket. A dinner by candle light could be good too (if you don't listen too close to the lyrics, which are sometimes really dark and strangely depressing). It's very relaxing music and makes you dream about nice things (again: if you forget the lyrics). However 'Sailor's Daughter' sounds very sweet, the lyrics ain't, it's even pretty dark. My favourite songs are 'Angina', ill - omened' (a nearly Heather Nova moment), 'A Thousand Questions' & 'Street Lights' (love it when she sings: I love the moment when she sings 'just the moment before they turn on the street lights'). I hope we hear more of this kind quality music, anyway: it's a great discovery coming from I love you records! - Peek-A-Boo Music Magazine

Bio

Alise Joste is a Latvian singer-songwriter who already has drawn big audiences to festival and club performances in her home country. When asked about her music, Alise says: "As I consider myself as a pretty shy person, it's always been very hard for me to talk about the things that are happening to me, what I think or feel. For a long time I kept it all to myself, until unexpectedly found songwriting being the way I could finally talk to others and myself honestly."

Alise's debut album with 12 self-penned songs was recorded mostly by herself with a little help from her brother in a country house. It was released under I Love You Records label in 2011.

Already well known on the singer-songwriter scene in Latvia, in 2012 Alise played her first shows abroad in Paris, France, and Portugal. In April 2013 Alise showcased at Tallinn Music Week, the biggest music conference in the Baltics, and received very positive feedback. After performing at summer festivals in Latvia and Sweden Alise is confirmed for several showcase festivals – Berlin Music Week, Reeperbahn Festival and Waves Vienna.
