Bio

Allaidh Modhan are a fresh new talent described as the most exhilarating prospect so far to emerge from the exciting modern Celtic music scene in Scotland. With a name that translates approximately as “the wild sound of music”, they have been classified as ‘funk-rock’, ‘Celtic-funk’ and are currently stocked under ‘folk/traditional/world’ in various retail outlets across the country. Heavily influenced by the traditional music of Scotland, the band freely express their extensive range of diverse influences throughout their music, resulting in a modern sound completely unique to them.

Originally hailing from Aberdeenshire, the band was put together in order to fulfil an Advanced Higher Music requirement and they had so much fun playing Wolfstone covers that they decided they could not only write original material , but also get paid for it by playing ceilidhs around the local area. They were a breath of fresh air to the ceilidh scene with their modern approach and ability to take nothing too seriously, and a couple of years worth of solid gigging, playing weddings and parties, and endless banter saw the band become a dynamic, extremely popular, professional unit, requested up and down the country by ITV executives, the EU Fisheries Commission and students alike. Highlights included a trip to Brussels to play onboard a ship, invitations to play in Spain and the USA, and appearances on local and nationally broadcast radio.

As graduation began to beckon, Allaidh Modhan decided to change direction slightly and concentrate on playing band nights and gigs rather than cater for the lucrative, but less exciting ceilidh industry. Their first gig with this new approach saw them comprehensively win a university battle of the bands in Edinburgh, more gigs followed around various venues across Edinburgh and Glasgow, doing much to bolster their already impressive following of fans, who were quite happy to travel to see this new exciting band. Friendships and existing working relationships began to develop with members of Shooglenifty and Wolfstone to name but two.

Summer 2006 was when the boys decided to record some of their finest compositions and so they spent weeks rehearsing before retiring to Ardgour, near Fort William to work with Nick Turner at Watercolour Studios on what would be their first album. The idyllic surroundings and lochside setting provided inspiration and the backdrop to 11 tracks that became “The Astonishing Flying Ring”, the album showcasing the bands distinctive sound to date.

Whilst continuing to gig locally, the band now looks to the future with a sense of excitement and optimism at what lies ahead. Festival slots and support for the biggest names are the goal in the short term, and beyond that, they hope to go on tour to promote their already successful album and unleash their powerful sound onto the audiences of live music everywhere, an ambition they believe, that can only result in success.
