Bio
For more than 40 years, jazzman Allan Barnes has etched his place in American music history. His career spans five decades and includes eclectic styles having performed or recorded with Donald Byrd, Prince, Wilson Pickett, Martha Reeves, Nina Simone, Pharaoh Saunders, Grant Green, Billy Taylor, Sonny Rollins, Bennie Maupin, Gil Scott-Heron, The Mizell Brothers. Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney, Bootsie Collins, The Detroit Experiment, Regina Carter, Geri Allen, the Dramatics, The Interzone Orchestra, Sandy Patton, Dwight Adams, Sunny Wilkinson, Mary Wilson, Teddy Harris, Roy Brooks, Big John Patton and many more.
He has taken his big sound on tours around the world yet he is best known as one of the pioneers of jazz fusion with The Blackbyrds and their mega hits “Walking in Rhythm,” "Summer Love" and "The Blackbyrds Theme."
Barnes hosted the PBS series Jazzland and has written music for TV series and commercials featuring Muhammad Ali, Leslie Nielson and Larry King. Allan starred in the Rockwell Pictures 2010 "Saxophone Man," shot on location in Detroit. Allan Barnes and Giant Steps recorded Baker's "Live" at 75, a soon to be released CD commemorating Baker's Keyboard Lounge's 75th Anniversary.
