Steal This Song

Written By: Allen Cote

steal this song from my lips
steal this verse from my fingertips
steal this groove from my hips
make it your own

steal this note from my throat
steal the river underneath the boat
wash me down the gutter
take me home

you're always so understanding
though you've never had to work too hard
originality is so demanding, but tell me
what's that got to do with art?

steal this verse from my pen
steal my soul with your eyes again
take all you can from me
i don't have much to give

stole these lines from a dimestore pulp
sat smoking coffee 'til my head got full
jotted down the first words that breached across my hull

you're always so understanding
though you've never had to work too hard
originality is so demanding, but tell me
what's that got to do with art?

But Anyway

Written By: Allen Cote

say goodbye to
living your life in the side view
waiting up nights for the breakthrough
spreading your love around

and it's a shame to
remember all the faces you once knew
forgetting all the places you've been to
sober with nothing to say
but anyway

i still love you
standing on the corner in your suede boots
speaking like i wasn't standing near you
soft without making a sound

so say goodbye to
thinking that i wasn't there for you
acting like i never had a faint clue
foggy at the end of the day
but anyway

we could try to
erase each other's names from the rearview
say the last few months were laced with voodoo
burning in a tin roof hut

so say goodbye to
leaving your number in the bathroom
drinking champagne from a glass shoe
cause this season love songs don't pay
but anyway

Chapel Hill Waltz

Written By: Allen Cote

you haven't been yourself
in some time
you've been locked up inside
sometimes i hear you cry
but i can smell fall in the air
and i can see snow crown your hair
darling i'll take you anywhere

oh sweet carolina
i'm hell-bent on climbing your chapel hill tonight
sweet carolina
i'll follow the white lines

i haven't been myself
for some days
i've been dropping hints around
like easter eggs
but i can smell spring in the air
and i can see rain crown your hair
darling i'll have you anywhere

oh sweet carolina
i'm hell-bent on climbing your chapel hill tonight
sweet carolina
i'll follow the white lines

i haven't felt my nose
for seven days
i blame it on summer rain
you blame it on cocaine

oh sweet carolina
i'm hell-bent on climbing your chapel hill tonight
sweet carolina
i'll follow the white lines

Thereziene

Written By: Allen Cote

i have sown my dreams
on land, sea and sky
but i reap nothing without you
put your precious feet
on the passenger side
and we'll drive 'til we find a brighter view

all the leaves are falling
the harvest season calls us home
as autumn takes her leisure
will death give way to pleasure
will we be buried in the snow?

and i forgot to tell you
i don't need you to feel alone
and i don't have to follow
to feel lost on this endless road

i have shown my need
and my fearful side
but i fear nothing like regret
put your hand in mine
and we'll drive through the night
wake up where the seasons never set

the ocean breeze is calling
the redwood trees are taller than all
our fears far behind us
no one will ever find us
if we just forget to call

and i forgot to tell you
i don't need you to feel alone
and i don't have to follow
to feel lost on this endless road

i have sown my dreams
on land, sea and sky
but i reap nothing but regret
put your hands in mine
and we'll drive through the night
wake up where the seasons never set

Grandpa's Theme

Written By: Allen Cote

you remind me of a poem
I've never heard
from a song that never played
in a bar where I might never
have been
you reveal me as a father
my mother's son's brother
in a house that never existed
except on the road to Bermuda

you expect me to believe you
when you say I'm wrong
you reject me, I don't believe you
in a moment I might be gone

you remind me of a postcard
I've never seen
scrawled with nonsense
I wouldn't have written
from a place where I might never have been
you deceive me when we're honest
and that's not at all
when I'm lonely you rebuke me
when I'm quiet you fill in the void

you accept me, I believe you
with your hands in my coat
you reject me, I don't believe you
the lies always stick in your throat

you remind me to write poems
I've never heard
for a song I'll never play
in a bar where I might never have been

Burning Man

Written By: Allen Cote

age ain't nothing but a state of mind
but it's the state I'm in this time
pain ain't nothing but a waste of time
but I'll be wasted tonight
and I'm thinking of sleeping it off
and I'm dreaming of breaking the law
and I know I'm old, Nicole
I know I'm old

time ain't nothing but a point of view
and the view from here's just fine
white ain't nothing but another hue
your tears a sparkling wine
and you're thinking of sleeping
with me
and you're dreaming of what you wanna be
and you're not too old, Nicole
you're not too old

sane ain't nothing but a point of view
and the view from here's just fine
pain ain't nothing but a waste of time
but I'll be wasted tonight
and I'm thinking of breaking the truth
I've been dreaming of sleeping
with you
and I'm not too old, Nicole
I'm not too old

Mezcal Reposado con Gusano

Written By: Allen Cote

Oh Teresa, why do you tease me so?
Sunday night sat waiting
in my wordless throat
Oh Teresa, will you unlock your smile?
Keep my conscience company
a little while

Reposado con gusano
Burns the back of my throat
While the worm whispers

Oh Teresa, why do you tempt me so?
Could it be the quiet curve
that forms your throat?
Oh Teresa, what will you call your child?
Have you felt the absence
of the voice inside?

Corazon del fuego
Sangre de Cristo
Flows through the hole in my nose
While the worm whispers

Oh Teresa, why do you tempt me so?
Could it be the quiet curve
that forms your throat?
Oh Teresa, will you unlock your smile?
Have you felt the absence
of the voice inside?
