INTRO
Auf ihrer letzten Tour trat Allroh im Vorprogramm der allseits verkulteten Shellac auf. Viel Ehre für eine deutsche Musikerin, die ihre Konzerte bzw. ihre aktuelle CD alleine mit Gitarre und Stimme bestreitet.
Doch diese Aufmerksamkeit hat Anne Rolfs sehr wohl verdient. Ihr Gitarrenstil ist einfach eine Wucht, der ohne Umschweife mit Jimi Hendrix verglichen werden muss. Alles drunter wäre falsche Bescheidenheit. Anne Rolfs (ehemals bei Wuhling aktiv) beherrscht ihr Instrument virtuos, doch das, was in den Siebzigern mal als "Gitarrengewichse" bezeichnet und von der Folgegeneration bekämpft wurde, ist ihr völlig fremd.
Wie Hendrix entnimmt Rolfs ihre Hauptinspiration dem Blues, verformt ihn aber zu einem Rudiment, zu Soundanballungen, die ebenso minimalistisch wie raumergreifend sind. Und noch etwas Außergewöhnliches kommt hinzu: Anne Rolfs singt zu dieser uramerikanischen Musik in deutscher Sprache. Dies jedoch zum Glück ähnlich verformt und verfremdet, wie sie ihre Gitarre einsetzt, nämlich bluesy und lautmalerisch, ohne dass man die Texte so richtig versteht. Die Intensität, Sturköpfigkeit und Konsequenz der vier langen Nummern auf "Nym", die einen völlig ausgelaugt zurücklassen, suchen derzeit ihresgleichen.

Zum Abschluss eine weitere bemerkenswerte Solospielerin und Perfektionistin. Was Anne Rolfs hier auf vier Stücken mit der Gitarre macht, ist eine geballte Wucht. Der Klang ist bei aller Passion, Wild- und Rohheit, mit der die Berlinerin ihr Instrument begreift, voller Klarheit, cooler Energie und Würde. Soviel abgeklärtes Pathos war selten. Klingt wie Rodeo auf Kometen. Wir erinnern uns an Wuhling: Schon in diesem Trio überzeugte Rolfs vor 10 Jahren und brannte sich mit abgeklärt-abgewandtem Gesang nachhaltig ein. Nach dem Split ging sie den Weg konsequent, manisch und luzid solo weiter. Allrohs Shellac-Support dieses Jahr passt da nur zu gut, dass Albini im November mit ihr in Chicago das nächste Album aufnimmt, logisch dito. Noch was? Oh ja: sie erhebt wieder ihre Stimme. Und wie.

Allrohs solo CD is causing quite a stir across the European mainland - one woman, one guitar, a very impolite amplifier and a yawping, whooping singing voice are the magic ingredients of this screaming bowl of whey. At a time when I’ve been deluged with a surfeit of minimalist records, loopy Berliner fem-bot Allroh goes for the max in every possible way, almost trying to rebuild every single Iggy and The Stooges LP from scratch as her fingers and tonsils works overtime on these raucous solo cuts. One of these four cuts is quiet and acousticish, but on th’ remaining scorchers you can virtually hear her Sonic Youth LPs in one hand, and her Segovia records in the other (no kidding) as she tears a new pathway across the urban sprawl. Meanwhile, her freewheeling voice is bravely attempting flip-flops that an athlete would fear to contemplate.

This four song release from Allroh sounds something like a jam between Harry Flint on guitar and PA tranced out at Patty Smith on vocals. Allrohs guitar manages to be droning and melodic the same, filling sonic space without the need for propulsion by bass or drums. Anne Rolf’s vocals are shamanic and incantatory, groping for the cosmos while remaining grounded in earthy emotion, she sounds as if she is channeling spirits from another world. There are hints of country and Indian classical music sure, garage rock and Debussy with the urge for transcendence running though everything like a golden thread and tying it all together into one glorious drone. Those looking for a listening experience to transport them into unexplored psychic space would do well to investigate this album. The less adventurous will still find NYM to be an collection of stately, finely wrought music studded with moments of uncommon beauty.
