"Soundoff Spotlight - Alpha-11"

Since the site’s launch last month, Alpha-11 has consistently been one of Soundoff.FM’s hottest bands. With two songs, “Machine,” and “2012,” atop the Soundoff Leaderboard for twenty-one days straight each, the post-apocalyptic Dallas-based quartet continues to please with its well-crafted blend of melody and muscle.

Coupling thick, ominous drop-tuning guitars and hard-hitting double-bass with a sense of melody and dynamics not often found in hard-rock bands, Alpha-11’s impressive sound is further augmented by the noise-rock of Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth, and Brooklyn-based contemporary Parts & Labor.

With ninety victories and counting, “Machine” is either a dystopic indictment of the near future, or perhaps a cautionary tale of the present in which the technology we own owns us. Fifty-six seconds of anticipatory technofreakout burst into a massive salvo of power-rock guitars, and it is the guitars that take center stage for most of “Machine.” That is, until the rolling thunder of the song’s bridge kicks like a motorcycle into fourth gear as the bass weaves a Tool-esque polyrhythm across a kick-drum-laden backbeat before the song kicks back into the final refrain, in which the vocal entreats us to “Kill the machine.”

“2012,” also the beneficiary of 90 victories, making Alpha-11 the most popular band on Soundoff, takes a slightly different tack. Spooky and apocalyptic, “2012” is an ode to the last man on Earth. After a weighty discussion of Judgment Day itself, it asks if, put in this position, you would have the courage to survive in this world after the clock has already counted past zero. Like “Machine,” each of Alpha-11’s four members contributes instrumentally to create a heavily-textured sonic wall evocative of Deadwing-era Porcupine Tree.

With a skintight rhythm section, thick layers of inventive guitars, and earnest, if somewhat ominous lyrics delivered perfectly over textured and dynamic song structures, Alpha-11 is certainly one of the brightest stars in the Soundoff universe. With shows coming up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and new tracks nearing release, we’ll certainly be featuring them again on Soundoff Spotlight. Thanks for reading – we’ll see you next week.
