ALTER VOCALIS EGO birgt in seiner Gesamtheit ein Konzept und was für eins! Unglaublich, was Frederik Behrens, Kopf hinter diesem Projekt hier für eine musikalische Blüte geöffnet hat. Man hat das Gefühl man durchschreitet einen philosophischen Garten, oder eher ein Labyrinth, eines aus dem man jedoch so schnell nicht mehr hinaus, sondern noch lange verweilen möchte. Schwer seine Musik in eine Schublade zu stecken, ganz banal kann man als erste Erklärung eine Welt irgendwo zwischen Leonard Cohen und Dead can Dance definieren, wer sich einen genaueren Eindruck verschaffen möchte, sollte unbedingt reinhören und seine eigene Definition gebären. AVE's most important source of inspiration and a kind of conceptual ‘frame’ – knowing that the limiting meaning of this word could be confusing – might be the mythic figure of the greek god Dionysus (also known as Bacchus in Roman mythology), just as different modern conceptions of the ‘Dionysian’ which were defined by Friedrich Nietzsche (and also his many successors, e.g. Georges Bataille):
“Saying Yes to life even in its strangest and hardest problems . . . that is what I called Dionysian, that is what I guessed to be the bridge to the psychology of the tragic poet…
What is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil…
There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.”
AVE places emphasis on connecting the ‘Dionysian’ with motives, subjects and ‘new myths’ of speculative fiction literature, while especially the masters of this genre Edgar A. Poe, H. P. Lovecraft and Gustav Meyrink have to be mentioned as important influences.
In 2004 AVE was founded by its singer and guitarist Frederik A. Behrens, who was working as a studio and live musician for several German gothic, rock and latin acts at that time.
