The best kept secret in music

The discography of all the musicians who took part in this project would be too vast to try to list, but this is Amalea's solo debut, if we were to be technical.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Fallen Fan Records proudly announces the release of Painted Tiles, the debut solo effort from accomplished Chicago artist Amalea Tshilds. Having made a name for herself over the years as a member of such groups as Tallulah and The Paulina Hollers, Tshilds has enlisted the help of an amazing collective of some of Chicago’s most prominent musicians to create an album of startling depth, beauty and motion.

Capitalizing on the natural gestalt of a core group of musicians that includes Leroy Bach, Jim Becker and Doug McCombs, to name but a few, Tshilds allows her songs – languid, sparkling musings on emotions that often can’t be named – to develop into sprawling, organic things of beauty; no longer songs alone, they become an immersive, compelling experience that is both exciting and passive in its approach.

Tshilds' appeal, her gift for timing, and her patience are immediately apparent as she moves the songs through a slowly but dramatically shifting, near liquid landscape of sound so tangible it at times feels as if the listener is surrounded by the music itself and nothing more. Comparisons to acts like Ida, Low, Azure Ray, etc., seem apt at times, but there is an undeniable sense about this album that something unique is happening. The subtly quixotic approach of the players to Tshilds' core material, Graeme Gibson’s perfect, earthy production, and the ghostly quality that arises seemingly from nowhere and everywhere with the marrying of the two yield what amounts to a whole new approach to a genre that begs to be explored in such a fashion.

Recorded by Graeme Gibson at Clava Studios in Chicago, Painted Tiles will be released May 30, 2006 on Fallen Fan Records.
