BandAmericanaSinger/Songwriter

I play poetic Americana originals, bluegrass and oldtime standards, and a few witty rock covers.

Biography

I've played guitar since the 1990s, but I first started writing songs and playing gigs in Charlottesville, VA circa 2001, influenced by the incredibly strong acoustic music scene there. I was lucky enough to learn from the likes of Danny Schmidt (now on Red House Records), Paul Curreri, Devon Sproule, Jan Smith, Brady Earnhart, and plenty more mind-blowingly talented singer-songwriters and bands. When I moved to Raleigh, NC in 2004, I started a bluegrass / Americana band called Shotgun Romance (lineup: standup bass, mandolin, banjo, and me on the mic and guitar) which enjoyed a good deal of local success in North Carolina. I was sad to leave Raleigh and Shotgun Romance (stupid day job), but I continue to write songs and play. In 2008 I had a mildly viral online hit called "All My Internet Friends."

Lyrics

I Have a Mountain All to Myself

Written By: Amanda French

Mountain

I have a mountain all to myself
Ain't gonna share it with nobody else
I have a mountain all to myself

Sit on the top in a rockin chair
Rock all day in my underwear
Jimmy crack corn and I don't care

Make my bed in the columbine
Tie my hair with a kudzu vine
Wash my brain in raspberry wine

Eight hundred forty-one heart-shaped leaves
Keep the catalpa company
Like the sun and the moon and me makes three

Come September the hollerin blow
Come December the silent snow
Well, that can't chase me back down below

Cause I have a mountain all to myself
Ain't gonna share it with nobody else
I have a mountain all to myself

Shotgun

I
I
I've got a gun
I've got a gun
I've got an auto-loading Model 1100 Remington

When I was a tiny little boy
I said Mama I don't want a toy
I want a gun
A real gun
I want an auto-loading Model 1100 Remington

She said Honey baby child of mine
Don't you know that shootin is a crime
And it's a sin
That gun's a sin
I said Well Mama if it is I'll go to hell with one big grin

I can almost hear that shotgun blast
I can almost taste that shotgun blast
It's got a walnut stock and checkered grip and man it's built to last

Daddy said when I was seventeen
This boy needs that beautiful machine
He needs a gun
I'll buy that gun
He wouldn't even buy me alcohol till I turned twenty-one

When I'm feelin miserable and low
I pick up my Remington and go
Out in the woods
The Carolina woods
You take your aim and hit your target and you feel just like you should

I can almost hear that shotgun blast
I can almost taste that shotgun blast
Good guns good whiskeys and good women never knock you on your ass (they all got light recoil!)

Last night I came home from huntin squirrel
Caught some stranger messin with my girl
Well who are you
Who the hell are you
Well who are you and who am I and what am I about to do

I can almost hear that shotgun blast
I can almost taste that shotgun blast
So if you want to get to heaven then you better start prayin fast

I can almost hear that shotgun blast
I can almost taste that shotgun blast
So if you want to get to heaven then you better start prayin

I
I
I've got a gun
I've got a gun
I've got an auto-loading Model 1100 Remington
I've got an auto-loading Model 1100 Remington
I've got an auto-loading Model 1100 Remington

Once in a Lifetime

Written By: David Byrne / Talking Heads

You may find yourself
living in a shotgun shack
You may find yourself
in another part of the world
You may find yourself
behind the wheel
of a large automobile
And you may find yourself
in a beautiful house
with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself
Well, how did I get here?

Letting the days go by
letting the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
water flowing underground
Into the blue again
after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime
water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is my large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife

Letting the days go by
letting the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
water flowing underground
Into the blue again
after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime
water flowing underground

same as it ever was
same as it ever was
same as it ever was
same as it ever was

water dissolving
and water removing
there is water
at the bottom of the ocean
under the water
carry the water
remove the water

Letting the days go by
letting the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
water flowing underground
Into the blue again
into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones
there is water underground

same as it ever was
same as it ever was
same as it ever was
same as it ever was

And you may ask yourself
What is that large automobile?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right, am I wrong?
And you may say to yourself
My god, what have I done?

Letting the days go by
letting the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
water flowing underground
Into the blue again
into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones
there is water underground

Letting the days go by
let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by
water flowing underground
Into the blue again
after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime
water flowing underground

same as it ever was
same as it ever was
same as it ever was
hey, look where my hand was

time isn't holding us
time isn't after us
same as it ever was
same as it ever was

after the water comes
same as it ever was
when the twister comes
here comes the twister

letting the days go by
letting the days go by
letting the days go by
letting the days go by

letting the days go by
once in a lifetime
letting the days go by
once in a lifetime
