"AMARA: GNOSIS TEMPLE"

The Review:

Recently I received Amara’s second recording called ’Gnosis Temple’ and I very pleased with how they progressed since their self titled debut . This time around they added a gothic feel to the mix thus making the music even harder to describe. This is a very good thing, so that the band doesn’t get pigeon-holed into any one genre. The band just has a way of combining different genres to create a unique sound that has an instant appeal factor, especially for fans of Abigail’s Ghost, Pain of Salvation, Sylvan, Three (3), Tool, to name a few.
I found to get the full aural effect of Gnosis Temple, you must hear it in one uninterrupted sitting. The music just flows so seamlessly from song to song. The moods of the songs run from an aggressive (for example: “Transmigration“) to a somber (for example: “Epitaph“) state of mind. Thankfully with the somber moments, they stay very clear of becoming a typically depressing sounding gothic band. On the aggressive sounding songs, singer Leo goes for a more primal growl without treading into the “cookie monster” vocals.

I think Amara needs to be picked up by a label for a wider audience but without sacrificing their musical vision. The band has a video on You Tube (“Transmigration”) and of course a MySpace page to hear for yourself. I still believe that Amara should be a band that more people will be talking about. I look forward to more from the band. I also hear they put on a great live show, so if you’re in the Portland, Oregon area, please check them out. As with their debut, I highly recommend you look into this band ASAP!!!!

"AMARA: AMARA (demo)"

Artist/ Band: Amara
Title: Amara
Label: Self release
Year of Release: 2005

The Review:
Amara is a quartet of musicians (guitars, bass, vocals, drums) from Portland Oregon, who’s style of music falls under no category but for reference sake, they’re a progressive- alternative metal band.
I received a cd-r of their music a few months back and was pleasantly surprised with the originality they possess. Mostly any metal act, progressive or alternative is usually a formulaic release but Amara breaks that with it’s use of progressive and some psychedelic and spacey instrumentation. So you see it’s hard to compare them musically but after several listens of this cd-r I firmly believe that they will appeal to fans of Fates Warning, OSI, Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and others.

According to the band, the music on the cd-r is a early draft on some ideas, but to my ears they sound like finished products. They are in the process of recording the full release with the songs featured on this cd-r plus others. The anticipation of hearing that album is great, because I do believe it’ll be on many people’s top releases of 2006. In you want to hear their music, and I highly recommend you do, the band has set-up shop at MySpace.com with plenty of samples.
