"Ambition (formerly 4Play of group Pretty Ricky) talks new album “Spaceship”"

ChristieOhh: Where did the name Ambition come from?
Ambition: It came from a group I was in when I was 9 yrs old. We wanted to be like the group Boys to Men. We decided to search the dictionary to find a name for our group, when we saw the word Ambition and read its mean we knew that was the name that represented us and we all agreed. After the group was over in high school, I was the only one who wanted to continue pursuing a singing career so I asked the group to keep name because I had the ambition to keep going.
ChristieOhh: When did you start with Pretty Ricky?
Ambition: In 2005, right after Pleasure P left the group. I was doing artist development with a group named Crave that was signed with Blue Star, we went on the “Late Night Special Tour” and I didn’t actually join group until about a year later.
ChristieOhh: Did you try-out for the group?
Ambition: It all kind of happened really fast. They heard my music and Baby Blue gave me a call around 11:00pm on a Thursday. He asked me to come out and audition for the group. I was very excited! He told me, “You are going to fly out tomorrow at 7 so be at airport at 6.” I was like, “what”; thinking to myself; I have a regular life, work and everything. But I had to go; I knew this was a chance of a lifetime. Baby Blue told me to pack for a weekend and I did. I got my flight and didn’t come back for a year. Immediately, I went into studio and started recording over old music so when we performed the songs and the music was played, it was my voice you heard. It was a lot of work and once we were done recording we went straight on tour.
ChristieOhh: Did Pretty Ricky decide to split?
Ambition: I actually left the group. It was the best thing to happen to me. We had a lot of creative differences and the group didn’t get along. After Pleasure left it was hard having a lead and they wanted to turn the group into something like Jodeci which was not the Pretty Ricky everybody had known. There were things I wasn’t allowed to do. I wasn’t allowed to speak in interviews at all. I’m the new lead, new guy and people wanted to hear from me. My fans wanted to get to know me. They created a gimmick to keep me from talking. They would say, “He doesn’t talk, he just sings” when an interviewer would ask me a question. And then tell me to hit it and I would sing. They even tried to convince me that was a way to show how good I was and showcase my talent.
ChristieOhh: You have now moved on and are pursuing your solo career! How is that going for you?
Ambition: I always wanted to be a solo artist. Joining a group was a stepping stone that comes along in your path. I appreciate everything but I do so much to become a great artist. I write all my music, dance, do artist development and create. Being a solo artist I get to showcase my talent as an artist, even after being in a group with the success we had. Being on my own is the best thing that ever happened to me. Being in a group didn’t allow me to show who I was. Even though I sung lead I still wasn’t me all the way. I was told to even change my name to 4Play and I have always been Ambition. So going solo gives me the opportunity to show what Ambition is all about. I do Pop and R&B! If I’m writing a song about sex it will be tasteful. I am diverse with my craft.
I speak at schools about drugs and alcohol. I have never done drugs or drank. That’s an important part of my life to give back. And I didn’t feel like I could do the best job for the kids with a name like 4Play.
ChristieOhh: When will your new album “Spaceship” be released?
Ambition: The album will be releasing next month. I’ve been working on it for a year now. It’s an introduction of me as a solo artist. While my audience is getting accustomed to my style I’m back in the studio working on my next album.
ChristieOhh: What do you want people to get out of your music?
Ambition: I like to write about situations that people go through all the time. I want to connect with my audience. I write about love and pain. I want people to feel my music. If they want to leave on this space ship because they are out of this world. As a male artist you are sometimes stereotyped as a player. Even a player finds that one person that they fall in love with. It’s a mix of experiences that I and others have been through and everybody can connect with my album men and women.
ChristieOhh: What keeps you motivated?
Ambition: 1st thing I love music. If there were no chance of me being famous, or being with Pretty Ricky or a solo artist I would still do music. I would still perform, I break dance now with a group out of Pittsburgh called “Get Down Gang.” So, I am always on stage, performing and doing what I love.
When you have a dream it’s so important to move forward. By just trying, it will give you so many experiences. If you could see the future and know in 10 yrs you would be here. It wouldn’t be exciting because you wouldn’t know what’s around the next corner and I’m always - Christie Ohh

For a year Ambition was lead singer of the R&B group Pretty Ricky based out of Miami. The group was featured in several magazines including Vibe, Right On, and The Beat.
