"Track Review: Amelia Allen "Bedtime Stories""

Now that everyone has a laptop, the introverts and bedroom artists of the music world are starting to make music in ways that weren’t previously possible. The entire songwriting process can be done privately, and the final products often play out more like private conversations than songs. Amongst the crowd embracing this M.O. is Amelia Allen, who is whittling out tender acoustic lullabies with just her voice and a guitar.
Intimate and introspective, “Bedtime Stories” is music made in and for quiet spaces. Nimble guitar lines dance in one by one as Allen sings right into your ear. Although her songwriting skills are still raw, she already has an ear for hooks and gentle, music box melodies. Sighing off-the-cuff couplets, the song succeeds largely on the strength of her saccharine vocals. It’s an intriguing introduction to a musician with politely sanguine potential. - Beats Per Minute

Bio

Amelia is an Alberta born singer/songwriter who is a relative newcomer to the Canadian music scene.

Amelia has played piano since she was a little girl and at the early age of 9 revealed her flare for constructing catchy melodies. As a shy teenager, at age 15 she bought her first guitar and began song writing in earnest… and very much in private.  Her musical debut in social media came involuntarily when her dad pushed her out of her musical closet (so to speak) by posting her first self-recorded song "Bedtime Stories" to Facebook in 2010.  Many of her friends at this time had no idea that Amelia played the guitar, let alone wrote music and sang.  Fortunately the reception from listeners was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging… "My dad dodged a bullet on that one", Amelia chuckles.

Upon completion of her degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2015 Amelia participated in the CBC Searchlight competition for “Canada’s best up and coming musicians”-  an experience which has lead to events that continue to enrich her musical journey.  Through this experience, Amelia connected with producer Doug Romanow of Noble Street Studio in Toronto and moved into the studio to explore the foot-loose and up-tempo space of the synth-pop sound.  The first of the 3 songs recorded during this period (“Say it Again”) was released in February, 2016.  The remaining 2 studio songs will be released later this year.

Although Amelia's musical roots are in acoustic story-telling, her current musical pursuits involve blending her soulful interpretive style, passion for story telling, and gift for producing punchy melodic hooks with the multi-layered sound of the synth-pop genre.  In addition, Amelia has expanded her audience to now include local music venue performance goers and social media followers from around the world.

Amelia has drawn her inspiration from artists that include Ellie Goulding, Grimes, & Carly Rae Jepson.
