"Vents Magazine Interview"

Who’s Amir Hoss?

I’m just a simple guy who’s passionate about music, eats really fast, loves animals and a good action movie.

How did you get started in the music scene?

Well it all began with a Melodica my grandma bought me for my 5th birthday. However, it was my uncle who played an important role in introducing me to music. He was a drummer and bought me my first percussion at the age of 13. My mother is also a very good singer. To date, I subconsciously know many lyrics because I grew up listening to her singing her favorite songs. My parents supported me very much but they always wanted me to keep music as a hobby. It wasn’t until grade 11 that I realized I want to pursue music as a career. My high school in Ottawa, Canada had a nice music room with a nice midi and DAW set up for its time. I was there most lunch hours trying to learn midi-sequencing. So one thing led to another, I bought an electric guitar, a keyboard (A Roland D-20) and a Cakewalk sequencer and have not stopped writing music since.

What are your music influences?

I grew up listening to all styles of music. I remember listening to records & tapes of Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, George Michael and Prince non-stop! I love 80’s music. During my teenage years I developed my love for Electronic Music. It was a picture of Paul Oakenfold; from his Perfecto Presents Another World album; playing for a full stadium, that really inspired me to write more dance tracks and become a DJ. I can say I’m quite the versatile music lover. I don’t dislike any music and I listen to and study all genres. I even listen to Justin Bieber J

Kick It. How was the recording and writing process? How you came out with the album’s title?

Kick It is one of the best selling singles from my album “Off The Richer”. The song took me nearly 6 months to finish as I kept changing it a lot. I used the song initially for a short music production video tutorial on YouTube. One day I decided to add a whistle to the track and a friend of mine thought it sounded like a FIFA video game soundtrack; so I decided to call it “Kick It”. I used a lot of percussion and synths in it. Some of the sounds like the trumpets were recorded live off of my Korg Triton.

The album is a mixture of a variety of electronic genres and I put a lot of time and effort into it. I wanted the album to have a catchy title and be punchy, so after much thought I came up with “Off The Richter”.

So are you planning to hit the road?

I recently moved to Montreal, Canada and I am lovin’ it here. Montreal is an ultimate party town and so many great artists have gone international from here. I have been blessed with many local gigs as well as many production and recording projects. I do have a few out of town gigs for the summer but till then I will stay warm and cozy in Montreal and play more local events.

What’s your method at the time of writing a song?

I am quite rhythmic and melodic. So the beat and the melody are my main focus in any song. I usually have a vision of the song before I even start writing it. I begin by choosing the right Kick drum and go on to writing the melody. Once I have those two locked, everything else comes naturally. If it’s a remix, I always start with chopping the vocals & adjusting the tempo and if it’s an original that I have to write lyrics for, then lyrics come last.

What has been one of the funniest moments you have been or took part while touring?

I’d have to say all my funny gig moments evolve around tipsy folks. I hardly drink but I do love the drunk people. In one of my recent shows I had a girl asking me to play some line-dancin’ Country music in the middle of a minimal tech set J

Tell us about your label Funktasy.

I had no plan of starting a label. But after much thought I decided to take the business side of music into my own hands. Right now there’s a few of us on the label. I have Flex Romie out of Toronto, Canada, a very talented Hip Hop artist and recently I signed two new acts, one of whom is Romain; he is an unbelievable R&B singer. His first single is coming out in a few weeks. Funktasy also hosts many events. Currently we are holding our Saturday Funktasy events at Montreal’s Club La Boom.

Are there any plans for the future we should be aware of?

I just finished a collaboration with Romain; the song is called “Shine”. I am also putting the last touches on a new single of mine called “All The Way Now”. Both tracks should be out by early February 2013. I am also involved in a few other productions. I recently started a new weekly podcast called “Funktasy Sessions”. I missed my days hosting radio shows so I decided to go back to my roots. I think I will have a busy year ahead and I’m excited!

Where can we find more about your music?

All my music and info can be found on my website www.amirmusic.com. I’m also present on many other social sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and SoundCloud. My podcasts and cloudcasts can be heard on Mixcloud or iTunes.

Do you feel like you’re moving on the right direction?

I hope so! J I managed to make a profession out of a hobby. So that’s a blessing on its own. I believe I chose the right path and someone’s watching over me!
