Bio

Colin and Darren began Ammonia Stars under the name Saskia as a songwriting duo dating back to 1998. Their mutual love of all things dark, beautiful and interesting in music spans through influences such as the Cure, XTC, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Talk Talk, David Bowie, Bjork, and many others.
Darren solves a lot of Colin's musical conundrums, his great sonic abilities with harmony, melodic counterpoint and plain great taste fitting perfectly with Colin's musical adventurousness.
Darren was a member of the Rhino's in the late eighties and early nineties.
The Ammonia Stars first studio album will be Darren's fourth as a recording artist. He brings integral experience and massive musical inspiration to the band.

Colin's lyrics are the lynch pin to the Ammonia Stars music and truly set it apart from the rest.
The dark and light, feeling and robotic, abstract and then intensely personal, wry with wit, comedic, and then touchingly personal.
They have the ability to transport the listener, to make the listener think, feel inspired and get caught in one's head for time on end without being annoying.
His influences lyrically go the same way as most songwriters of his generation, but he likes the abstract the best, Sid Barrett, John Lennon, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Drake, Thom Yorke, Frank Black, Perry Farrell, Richard Ashcroft to name a few who have inspired him over the years.
Colin's voice has been consistently compared to David Bowie, and Thom Yorke may also come to mind. Colin thinks he sounds like Frank Sinatra or Etta James. Depends on the mood.

The vocal blend of Colin and Darren is so that they often get confused as to what part they are singing on recordings. Perfectly complimentary in tone, along with Matt they create a tower of harmony.

The engine of this band is Hoto Parker and Matt Robinson.

Hoto is a trained professional who has worked with many bands over the years, but has found a sense of emancipation working with this band. He gets to hit really hard.
His great technical ability, groove and meter, make him a joy to behold on drums and take everything to a heightened level of expertise.

Matt is a singer/songwriter who joined the band upon hearing the songs on an 8-track one sunny afternoon. Matt is an exceptionally talented musician, with big, gifted hands, who just finds his bass lines on the spot and locks it down. A brilliant fingerstyle acoustic player, Matt can be heard all over the new album on guitars, acoustic and electric.

Jeff is the ethereal mechanic of the band.
The third member. The Wall of Sound.
Constantly tweaking his guitars, amps, pedals, searching for that ever elusive tone that he seems to have in droves.
Capable of being the feature as well as supporting Colin's vocal, Jeff is a rarity in music: A lead guitarist and a diplomat. Jeff B I.

Ammonia Stars music is a beautiful and rough ride reflecting the world as it is today, within and without, a compassionate band and an exciting, original new voice on the Canadian music scene.

We are all Ammonia Stars.
