Elk Grove band A Moments Notice has been making its mark around the Sacramento area since its inception in April 2005.

The band’s members are Steven Box, who is the lead vocalist and plays the guitar, Ryan Lewis plays the guitar and is also a vocalist, Corey Lewis plays the bass and Markeda Shorter plays the drums.

The Christian band made it to second place in the Elk Grove Teen Center USA’s 2006 Elk Grove Teen Idol contest. They came back the next year to claim the first place spot in the competition, and won it in 2007.

“We did a song that normally isn’t our style that we knew the judges would like called ‘Next Big Thing’ which is going to be on our next EP release in March,” Box said.

On Feb. 23, the band also claimed the first place spot in the Sacramento News and Review’s Jammies Night of Contemporary Music competition at the Crest Theatre.

They competed with 11 other bands for the top spot.

They describe that day as very slow since they were the second-to-the-last band to perform.

“We were very anxious,” Box said.

The contest had over 1,000 audience members, which is the largest audience the band has performed for.

“That is the way all of our shows should look like,” Box said. “It felt right.”

“It’s how it’s supposed to be,” Shorter replied.

All of the band’s members write their songs together, which they say their inspiration comes from either experiences they have gone through and received help from God, or straight from the Bible.

“We were totally blessed that we won,” Box said. “I think we’re the first Christian band to win the Jammies.”

The teens have goals of making this band their lifelong career and using the band to teach others about Christianity.

“Our band’s goal is to present God and tell people that there is something much more better to live for instead of just waking up every day to a regular day life.” Corey said.

A Moments Notice (AMN) got its name from the Bible’s Revelations chapter that said Jesus would return. The meaning is that people should live a good life because Jesus could return at “A Moments Notice.”

They currently have two albums, one full-length and the other is the single “Masquerade,” which is available on iTunes. Their next album should be out in March.

The band currently has its song “Masquerade” available on iTunes and has grown its own following.

AMN’s primary Web site is on MySpace, where it currently has 6,178 people on its “friends” list. It has links to the band’s music, videos and lists all scheduled performances.

“A Moments Notice reaches a core group of teenagers who wish to seek God through heart felt music and lyrics,” is written on the band’s Web site.

Also listed on the Web site are the band’s sponsors, which are Typecast Clothing, Killherscene Clothing, Frazee Paint and Wallcovering and Laguna Christian Center.

“My dad got us our first sponsor, Frazee Paint,” Box said. “They gave us money to do our recording in Arizona. They helped us pay for the recording.”

All members attend Laguna Christian Center, which donated $1,000 to the band to record.

The two clothing companies provide them with discounts or free shirts and provide the band with support on fliers and Web sites.

Fans, or “friends” on the MySpace Web site are not only local, but include people from as far as Georgia and Florida.

The members say they are like family to each other, with their biggest conflicts being about prioritizing and being on time.

They say they are all straightforward with each other, so things do not usually escalate.

Shorter, who is the only girl in the band, said it does not bother her.

“Lately, it’s been a little different just because everyone’s all getting older and we all have our differences,” she said, “But we are all like a family. I just feel like I am one of the guys and they’re just one of the girls.”

Corey and Ryan are twin brothers who say they have the same interests and friends, so it has not been difficult for them being in the band together.

“It’s like growing up with my best friend,” Corey said. “I’m serious. We had to be there with one another and always got each other’s backs.”

“There are families where there are brothers and sisters who fight all the time and just don’t get along, we’re not like that,” Ryan said. “We’re like friends too.”

The band members said they are very thankful for the support they have gotten from their friends and family.

“Can we thank God?” Box said. “He’s our main source.”

Discography

When A Moments Notice began, our hearts were set on creating music. Shortly after the moment we first began, we took matters into our own hands by creating our first album "Since Ever" consisting of 11 songs. A little over a year down the road, we were picked up by this company called "Green Light Firm" who insisted that we record with Pendlwood Studios. Here we created our first single CD "Masquerade" in the summer of 07. In December of 2007, We went back to Arizona to record our EP entitled "Every Season Under Heaven". ESUH is do to be out spring of 08. Masquerade has been aired numerous times on the radio station 98 rock, Local Lycks.
