Bio

Dubbed a “Musical Devil in a Red Dress” by legendary Producer Arif Mardin, Brooklyn Composer/Performer AMY KOHN crashes atonality, music-theater, experimental pop and jazz into music that’s whimsical, cathartic, sweet and smart. Called "Charles-Ives-Meets-Kate-Bush," Amy leads her 7-piece AMY KOHN BAND to melting ice-sculptures, epoxied roses, and seas of calligraphy, marking wild musical and lyrical territory, yet grounded by her “eloquent and personal pianism and voice.”*

The AMY KOHN BAND performs at top New York venue (Joe’s Pub, Makor, Barbes, Galapagos Art Space...) and beyond (London's famed Klinker Club) and her music’s been aired on WQXR, WFMU, and WNYC. This February was the World Premiere of her Radio-Opera 1 Plum Sq. as part of WNYC's American Music Festival (David Garland's program Spinning on Air). Her 1st CD: THE GLASS LAUGHS BACK has been called “real music”* and her 2nd: I'm in Crinoline, Co-Produced with Joe Mardin, is out this Summer (Promo available).

Amy Assistant Conducts, sings/plays with and arranges for the Main Squeeze All-Female Accordion Orchestra, writes off-beat music-theater and is a recipient of the 2003-04 Dramatist’s Guild Jonathan Larson Memorial Musical Theater Writing Fellowship. March 2003: the AMY KOHN BAND performed her music in a reading of Lysistrata at the BAM Harvey Theater, sharing the stage with Kevin Bacon, Bill Irwin, F. Murray Abraham, and Mercedes Ruehl.

She’s got an MFA from NYU’s Tisch Grad Musical Theater Writing Program, and a BA in Compostion from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music.
