"Amy gets her gum and sings about it"

Amy gets her gum and sings about it
August 16, 2007
By MYRNA PETLICKI Contributor

Amy Lowe's not ashamed to admit she has a fondness for gum. The Chicago songwriter even sings about it in her Parents' Choice Award-winning album, "I Like Gum." Her crystalline voice, honesty and clever original songs are a few of the reasons why families look forward to Lowe's performances. She will share her musical wit and wisdom, backed by guitarist Dave Katzman, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Jewett Park, 836 Jewett Park Drive, Deerfield.
Lowe's selections will include a silly song called "Lickety Split" which she said is about "a character that lives in a land far away where everything is made out of feet." Despite its playful title, Lowe's "Miles Be-Boppin Hoppin" has a serious message. It's about "how sometimes being different can actually be a way to lead people to a new way of looking at life," she said.

"Parent's Choice"

Fire in Boomtown
1999 Storytelling
Ages: 8 - 12 yrs.
Performed By: Amy Lowe
Performed By: Megan Wells
Producer: Emphasis Entertainment Group/Emphasis Kids
CD Price: $14.98
Tape Price: $9.98
Review:
A sterling mix of music, commentary, theater and history as Amy Lowe and Megan Wells recount the story of The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. First, they dispatch the legend, captured in that catchy song ("One Dark Night") that vilified Mrs. O'Leary and her lantern-kicking cow for the raging inferno that destroyed an entire city. They paint a vivid picture of a city that grew far too fast, with far too little planning and they sing chillingly of the "Mud, Wood, Drought, Blunder & Wind," conditions that led to the devastation. Most poignantly, Lowe and Wells interweave their haunting song, "Listen to the Wind," with eloquent testimony from actual eyewitnesses to the tragedy. The pair wind up this well-researched, beautifully performed piece of historical, musical theater on an uplift, commemorating the losses and the hardy souls who survived to rebuild their lives and their city.

"Movin in Building A Yown"

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL 2007
Social Studies
Movin' in, Building a Town: The Story of Naperville. 1 CD. 59:21 min. Emphasis Kids. 2006. ISBN 1-893967-30-1. $15.98.
Gr 3–6—This CD is a musical tribute to the settling of Naperville, IL, in 1831. There are 21 catchy and fun songs and stories on the CD which was originally created to accompany a set of workshops taking place at the Naper Settlement. Amy Lowe, a singer, songwriter, and storyteller, wrote and performs all of the songs, accompanied by guitar and percussion instruments. She's also accompanied by back-up vocalists, including a fifth-grade class on the song "The First Schoolmaster." Interwoven with the songs are bits of narration to supplement the historical information. Some songs profile figures in Naperville's history, such as "Captain John Naper," a tribute to the city's founder, and "The First Schoolmaster," which tells about Lester Peet and lists the fathers of all 22 of his students during his first year of teaching. Among the other songs are "The Blacksmith," "Paw Paw Post Office," and "Pay the Toll." The liner notes include the lyrics as well as historical photographs of Naperville. A solid addition to school and public libraries, especially those requiring more material on this time and place in history.—Maren Ostergard, King County Library System, Issaquah, WA
