"SANDPIT #52"

Amy Newton-Banks live at The Sandringham Hotel, Newtown.
September 2nd 2008.

"Arriving late, I only caught the last couple of songs from Amy Newton-Banks. What a shame! With a face as lovely as Sophie Ellis-Bextor and an even lovelier voice, Newton-Banks was the most entrancing girl-with-a-guitar I’ve seen in some time. Doing so much with so little, the diminutive singer of Newcastle outfit The Bell Curve captivated the crowd with a smile, a guitar and gorgeous folk-pop songs. She closed with one of The Bell Curve’s songs, Right In Front Of Me and she chewed on its vowels and crawled up its octaves like Tori Amos. I was so impressed that I picked up her Stepping Stones and Pop-up Books EP, a charming document that suggests we’ll be hearing more from Newton-Banks in the years to come."

Bio

Amy Newton-Banks has been writing and recording music since she figured out the basic mechanics of her top loading cassette recorder, but it was some time before Amy brought her music into the public domain.

Since arriving on the live music scene in Newcastle in 2005, and now performing around the Sydney music circuit, Amy has supported big names such as Liam Finn and has come into her element, knowing how to truly captivate an audience with her blend of acoustic folk/pop tunes, whether playing at a packed hotel, café or an outdoor festival.

Described as “the most entrancing girl-with-a-guitar [to be] seen in some time” in the Drum Media, Amy delivers her songs with vivacity and thought in an aptly expressive style. Based primarily on life experience and touching on social commentary, Amy’s lyrics delve into sadness, elation, and much in between.

In addition to her solo performances Amy is the lead singer of alternative rock band The Belle Curve who are steadily making their mark on the Newcastle music scene, having shared the stage with Kate Miller-Heidke, Black Market Rhythm Co, and The Seabellies, amongst others.

Amy released her debut EP, “Stepping Stones and Pop-up Books” in 2008, a six track record highlighting Amy's eclectic style of song writing. The release of this EP has seen Amy venturing up and down the coast of NSW with her guitar in tow, unfolding many new songs along the way.
