Analog Input

Analog Input’s main intention is to create organic, thoughtful, and danceable music.
Analog Input is a three piece production/performance team that tastefully blends elements of electronica and hip-hop with jazz. Analog Input’s defining style lies in groove-based compositions resonant with the textural and harmonic explorations of Andrew Huang on vocal effects with Iain Farrell and Adil Johan on alto and tenor saxophones. Analog Input is unique because its production and performance process is both spontaneously improvised and planned with utmost detail.

Huang passionately represents the oral tradition of hip-hop with his up-tempo rapping technique while Farrell and Johan create ethereal atmospheres with their effect-processed saxophones. The band’s pieces are showered in the warm timbres of analog synths as the band members’ multi-instrumentality allows them to switch between instruments to create interesting sounds and ‘spectralscapes’. In the absence of a drummer, the band uses a laptop to ‘spin’ and manipulate their beats.

In 2003 Farrell and Johan explored sonic textures through the use of saxophones processed through guitar effects. Huang joined in 2004, fulfilling the duo’s quest for a rapper with a wealth of musical abilities. The trio’s compositions are mainly through composed; skeletal elements of the songs are improvised collectively while horn embellishments and vocals are layered on top of these base structures.
