"The Spiegel Tent"

The Spiegal Tent Edinburgh Festival 2006
3 WEEKS- EDINBURGH FESTIVAL- 2006
Andi Neate
For one night only, Andi Neate graced the Fringe with her poetic presence.
The extraordinarily talented singer/songwriter took just an hour and ten minutes to endear herself to a delighted Spiegel Garden crowd, with her gob-smackingly good voice and highly sensitive song-writing skills. After nearly 18 years of performing, Neate's three album releases have taken her as far afield as the Falkland Islands , developing her Jazzy-Folk music along the way. Tonight, the accomplished guitarist had a keyboard, a double-bass, a cello and backing singers accompanying her, which complemented the wonderfully resonating acoustic sound. With musical talent coming out of her ears, it is no surprise that Neate has been labelled ' Scotland 's best kept secret'. How long before she becomes ' Scotland 's best worldwide export'?

"Top 5 Prague Fringe Picks 09'"

The Prague Fringe Festival:

Andi Neate
If you haven’t seen Neate sing, you should. But go early, as anyone who has seen her perform at past Fringe Festivals will be standing at the door waiting to get in. Neate, a Scottish singer-songwriter, is a one-woman Voice and Verse, and seeing her directly after the talented Irish lot is the perfect Celtic night cap. Neate’s mellifluous voice, which ranges from the quietly wistful to pub forte, covers a songbook that extends from folk and country to rock and jazz, all prefaced with a bit of storytelling about the songs origins. She’s a generous performer, one that an audience quickly surrenders themselves to. I’ve written about Neate before, and feel I’ve exhausted my supply of superlatives. So, just go. And as she’s playing three more night in Prague, go again. U Malého Glena

"An acoustic artist worth getting to know"

The Jazz Bar. 6th August 19:30

“I fell in love with somebody completely by accident, just by sitting beside them,” is a great way to introduce a song. Andi Neate is an artist who is very obviously sincere in everything she does. She is a confessional singer-songwriter, singing songs about her life and dreams with three chords and an acoustic guitar.

She is accompanied by a tight, competent band of piano, double bass, drums and a female backing vocalist. The Jazz Bar’s grand piano lends a richness to the band’s sound that most groups of this sort have to make do without, and with Neate’s muscularly feminine cornet-like voice, the aural effect is juicy, bordering on lush. On the upcoming gigs she promises string sections, trumpets and some new a capella songs.
There are jazzy hints in the arrangements, with some playful piano, brushed drums and one track with a shuffle rhythm recalling Van Morrison’s Moondance or early Norah Jones. Mostly the music is in a familiar, soft rocking style.
She is an engaging performer, and a lovely person, heart and soul: worth checking out, especially should you tire of the arch and arty, and find yourself after something a little earthier. [David Walter Hall]

"Prague Fringe- Best of the Fest!!"

Fringe Review: Andi Neate
Along with The Crying Cherry and In A Thousand Pieces, this is the best of the fest.
By Guy Roberts

Wed 27th May, 2009 [updated Wed 27th May, 2009]
Prague Fringe Festival favorite Andi Neate returns for her 7th year to Prague and anyone who is lucky enough to get a ticket will be so very glad she does. This tattooed Scottish bad-ass with a voice like an angel and who plays a lot more than three chords on her guitar (go see the show to know the reference), shatters the expectations of what is possible in the atmospheric U Maleho Glena. Creating a unique sound reminiscent of the best of Suzanne Vega, Ani Difranco and Dolores O’Riordan, Neate captures, transforms and reinvents the idea of singer-songwriter and transports the audience into her very special world. Highlights include the songs “Tails from the Circus”, “Home”, “Storybookman” and “Witch’s Cat” all from her new album Crows, Rooks and Ravens.

Bio

Andi is an expressive performer, with a gift for melody, memorable hooks and delightfully offbeat lyrics. Her voice ranges from powerhouse to wistful sweetness; her music style covering folk, rock and jazz... and a touch of gospel on Shine.

She has been described as “angel-voiced” and “street tough” and compared with Suzanne Vega, Ani Difranco and the Cranberries. Her appearance is a mixture of confidence and vulnerability - from the trademark tattoos writhing round her right arm to the tumbling mass of dark hair to her sometimes stocking soles when performing. Her childhood on a remote west coast island encouraged her natural affinity with nature, and the strong sense of independence which led her to building her own house – brick by brick - and which has taken her and her music round the world.

Andi has performed as far afield as Canada, Tblisi, Sicilly and the Falkland Islands as well as making regular appearances at Prague, Glastonbury, Wickerman and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. She was one of the winners of Burnsong Gathering (2007), the national competition to find and promote the best new songwriting talent in Scotland. The song which won her that place – Home – is one of the new studio recordings on this CD and eloquently expresses the bitter-sweet contradictions of the place you come from.
