“Serpent Trains” by Andrea Guskin is the sort of track that one can happily listen to for hours on end. The eclectic mix of musical styles helps to build a dream-like atmosphere that is both alluring and thought provoking. Indeed, the use of purely organic instruments is a masterstroke, and professional instrumentation ensures that everything, from the wonderful upright bass to the enchanting guitars, fits perfectly into the soundscape. The ethnic percussion provides a solid backbone and gives the piece a world-music quality that is reminiscent of Tori Amos in places. I like Andrea’s vocals too, particularly the phrasing which is distinctive, without being over-intrusive... Andrea Guskin is an outstanding artist with a unique brand of edgy folk music that’s easy to listen to, yet highly addictive. (JP) - Jay Redbourn

Bio

My songs float between many genres. Vocally, I began by listening to the Jazz greats (Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae) and lyrically I have been inspired by folk/rock lyric giants: Cohen, Costello, Mitchell.
In the past few years, I have been obsessed with
African rhythms and have been translating some of these rhythms to my guitar/songs to create a trance
like feel. My new CD "Serpent Trains" captures this
transformation, as it includes songs with unusual rhythms, complex lyrics and a catchy chorus. On top of all this is a clear voice with delicate phrasing. I have performed and recorded mostly in NYC and San Francisco. Currently I have been studying Brazilian and afro-cuban percussion with Robert Wallace (performed with David Rudder, Bonnie Raitt), and letting those rhythms sink even more deeply into my songwriting.

Songs have been recognized by Billboard Song Contest, Global Lyric Awards.
