"Sleeper Review"

Lara Purvis

From the first track, Before I Fold, to the final, Voice in the Morning, Sleeper sparkles with the fresh beauty of early morning dew. The debut release by local musician Andrea Simms-Karp is enriched with talented guest musicians and a depth and array of instrumentation. Simms-Karp's talent is limited to her musicianship. Her writing spills out into her lyrics, in particular on the title track I Am a Sleeper, where she treads the familiar ground of love and friendship; her lyrics are strong in their sense of place, standing alone in their strength but becoming even more poignant through her soft, youthful Harmer-esque voice. Sleeper is a beautiful and polished album from an up-and-coming local singer-songwriter. It's certainly a worthy debut. - Ottawa XPress

Released September 22, 2007
As heard on CBC Radio's Vinyl Cafe and Canada Live.

Ottawa songstress Andrea Simms-Karp is an indie roots powerhouse with a stellar debut album under her belt. 'Sleeper' has already scooped up airplay across the country on CBC and campus radio, and she won two honourable mentions for Best New Musical Act and Best Folk Album in the XPress 'Best of Ottawa' readers' poll. She has been compared to Jill Barber and Basia Bulat. Recently, Sleeper hit #2 on the !earshot folk/roots/blues charts.

Andrea has played with bands Alicide and The Vanity Press, and won the Beth Ferguson Award for upcoming songwriter in 2003. Her debut album, Sleeper, has been described as "confessional" by Penguin Eggs Magazine, and as "beautiful and polished" by the Ottawa XPress. Most recently, her music has been heard on CBC's Vinyl Cafe, Bandwidth, and on Canada Live.

Combine a banjo and some sugary vocals, and this is one act you don't want to miss.
