Magnetic. Beautifully spun, adventurous indie pop. "This imaginative pop maestro’s delivery and message are so delightfully refreshing that it’s hard to remember she’s working from the pop music playbook." --Seattle Sound Magazine, 4 1/2 star review of new album "In The Skyline.

Biography

A 4 1/2 star review of Andrea Wittgens "In The Skyline" in the Jan 2009 issue of Seattle Sound Magazine:

"Strength can be commanding, but so can eloquence. Especially when a silver tongue rides a voice that flitters with the wonderful unpredictability of a butterfly and the laser precision of, well, a laser. Such is the case for Seattle's Andrea Wittgens, whose two greatest assets (her voice and her pen) both underline and elevate each other. Her poetry is thoughtful, genuine and, on many occasions, as playful as a cabaret. Meanwhile, her pop ambitions are never too obvious; in fact, they're often obfuscated by chamber-sized orchestrations that oscillate between classically minded, grand strategies and flashy accoutrements. Beneath her penchant for torch songs and love songs is a tendency toward writing about unreal realms as diverse as Oz, Mordor and B-movies. This imaginative pop maestro's delivery and message are so delightfully refreshing that it's hard to remember she's working from the pop music playbook." SHAWN TELFORD (Seattle Sound Magazine)

Common wisdom in the entertainment business dictates if you can't describe it in two sentences, go back to the boards and refine your pitch. However, those experienced and well traveled in the business know that in truth, it's the ones that you can't describe easily that are the true and lasting artists.

Seattle based singer-songwriter Andrea Wittgens is the freshest original new voice on the scene in years. Combining sultry, engaging vocals (Rickie Lee Jones meets Fiona Apple) with clever yet disarmingly honest lyrics, she has been holding audiences in rapture throughout North America.

Originally from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Andrea moved to Seattle in the late 90’s and stirred up a wave of notice with her band Sugartown. 2 albums and 4 years later it was time for her to shine as a solo artist. Her 2006 EP Alibi (produced by Grammy Award winning producer/mixer Bob Power) garnered excited reviews in the northwest and also in New York City where she suddenly found herself with a notable buzz in the east coast music industry.

In October 2008 she will release a full-length album In The Skyline. An adventurous mix of instrumentation, this new collection of original songs (including “Comme tu veux” her first French recording) journeys from hypnotically intimate string quartet textures to raucous full band orchestrations. “In The Skyline” represents a convergence of the writing, singing and riveting stage presence that marks Andrea Wittgens' arrival as a singer-songwriter of the highest order.

Since coming to Seattle, WA, Andrea has generated a solid regional following. Her success includes airplay on several local radio stations including 103.7 "The Mountain" KMTT, KEXP, KUOW and more. She is a favorite at top Seattle area nightclubs like Nectar, The Tractor Tavern, The Crocodile Cafe, Sunset Tavern and ToST. She has played to packed houses in Manhattan at The Living Room, The Knitting Factory and Rockwood Music Hall and mesmerized crowds as she opened for Grammy-winning artist Shawn Colvin Seattle at Seattle's historic Moore Theater.

WHAT THE PRESS IS SAYING ABOUT "In The Skyline"

"With musical compositions that combine the energy of early punk with the slickness of modern pop, she creates music that is perfect for now... Multiple time signatures, key changes and occasionally dense orchestrations make each song an aural journey rather than merely another pop ditty... It accomplishes something few contemporary albums achieve - a cohesive and unique musical statement that defies labels and simple descriptions." -- Vintage Guitar Magazine, August 2009

"A silver tongue rides a voice that flitters with the wonderful unpredictability of a butterfly and the laser precision of, well, a laser…this imaginative pop maestro’s delivery and message are so delightfully refreshing that it’s hard to remember she’s working from the pop music playbook." --Shawn Telford, Seattle Sound Magazine

“Forget all that compared to this and that stuff, Wittgens is her own voice and it’s one you’ll be glad to hear. Hot stuff from a newcomer that’s sure to be around for a while.” ---Chris Spector, Midwest Record

“With a tip of the hat to Brecht, Jellyfish and maybe even XTC, Wittgens’ music is a soundtrack for a waiting room in a bordello or perhaps a carnival. Throughout the dozen tracks, the ideas and creativity seem to flow effortlessly, from the rock edge to ‘Blue-Eyed Fool’ and the meticulously orchestrated ‘Everything Is Relative to You’. The Beatlesque ‘Beautiful You’ sounds precisely like its title: With a flanged, almost liquid guitar line, the songs ebbs and swells from nothing but Wittgens voice to a beautiful ensemble.” ---Michael Lipton, Charleston Gazette

"Incredible! Her songwriting sensibilities are the ilk of Edie Brickell, Carol Bayer Sager, and Joni Mitchell. And her voice just soars! You've got to invest your time to hear thi

*I Know Better

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

I KNOW BETTER

I know better than hanging ‘round these sort of corners
I know better than that
(You got to hand it to me)
Someone called my name
But I know better

I know better than worldly conversations
Breeding fantasies
(You know the ones I mean)
They bring you to your knees
Well, I know better

Northern girls get tangled up in southern stories
Southern boys, go west and keep on going
Take a chance
Take the darkest alley you can
There’s always something better…

I know better than waking at the witching hour
I know better than that
Just close your eyes
And someone calls your name
I know better

Northern girls get tangled up in southern stories
Southern boys, go west and keep on going
Take a chance
Take the darkest alley you can
There’s always something better…

AQUARIUM

One day, you find the world you know has gone blind
So watch the stars get wasted and fall down out of sight

Oh, so strange. In the end, they said everything was easy

Easy like la-di-dum
Or living in aquariums
Easiest thing I ever done
Living in aquariums
Mmmmm

One day, you find the most peculiar light
Follow to far-fetched places and never question why

Oh, so strange. In the end, they said everything was easy

Easy like la-di-dum
Or living in aquariums
Easiest thing I ever done
Living in aquariums
Mmmm

Easy like la-di-dum
Or living in aquariums
Easiest thing I ever done
Living in aquariums

Alibi Was Just An Afterthought

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

ALIBI

You can come to me like a saint.
Trapdoor escapade - A-O-K.
Hold me down, I may just love you.
You can come to me in the night.
Proposition me - I just might Take it south now and I will follow.

Alibi was just an afterthought and down to Mexico (alright)
Never got the chance to tell you that I need you so
Off you go like the ghost of a guy that I know (that I know)

You’re a tricky one - I don’t care.
Come on track me down anywhere.
Oh go on now, you almost had me.
Alibi was just an afterthought and down to Mexico (alright)
Never got the chance to tell you that I need you so
Off you go like the ghost of a guy that I know (that I know)

Easy comes but never goes away so easily (ain’t it sweet)
Sting me like a bee or leave me be we’re going to get it down eventually
Eventually…
Alibi was just an afterthought and down to Mexico (alright)
Never got the chance to tell you that I need you so
Off you go like the ghost of a guy that I know (that I know)

Did You Go Too Far?

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

DID YOU GO TOO FAR?

Ten thousand miles away I saw it coming
Just a speck on my eye
Should have just left it there on the horizon
But where’s the fun in that?
Where’s the fun in that?
Everyday can take you farther at the whim of a wonderlust
Until you’re stopped in your tracks
And you try to go back

Did I go too far?
Did I open up a corner of my heart -
That hadn’t seen the light
And now it won’t go back into the night
Well that’s the hardest part
You can’t go back to where you started
Did I go too far?

Who took the lid and sealed it up poor Pandora?
Put a spell on the prize
Should have just left the box back in the corner
But where’s the fun in that?
Where’s the fun in that?
Sent you in a fleet of fantasies like you’ve never seen
As you’re sailing away
Did you wish you had stayed?

Did you go too far?
Did you open up a corner of your heart -
That hadn’t seen the light
And now it won’t go back into the night
Well that’s the hardest part
You can’t go back to where you started
The bittersweetest part
You can’t go back to where you started
When you go too far

Highly Trained Killer

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

You’ve got style like a highly trained killer
I could try, but I’m highly highly doubtful that I’ve got the winning etiquette
Such a rush, like a snake in the ballroom
I showed up but I’m wilting like a wallflower baby holed up at the corner table
La la la la here’s how it goes:

Give me love give me love but just enough to mess me up
Just a little taste give a little more give me everything
O we’re gonna pack it in like a movie
Nothing less than overkill in under thirty seconds or I know I won’t ever catch the heart of you baby

Take you on like a brand new religion
Started strong but now I’m ringing round the rosie with a pack of holy rollers
This won’t do, and I’m feeling neglected
Mama says you’re coming soon and holy holy batman blues you’re singing such a lonely tune
La la la la here’s how it goes:

Give me love give me love but just enough to mess me up
Just a little taste give a little more give me everything
O gonna pack it in like a movie
Nothing less than overkill in under thirty seconds or I know I won’t ever catch the heart of you baby

In a love song, things should turn out good
well give my kisses to Mr. Robin Hood
I leave tomorrow I like it short and sweet
sweet like fiction with nothing in between

Instrumental

This won’t do, and I’m feeling neglected
Mama says you’re coming soon and holy holy batman blues you’re singing such a lonely tune
La la la la here’s how it goes:

Give me love give me love but just enough to mess me up
Just a little taste give a little more give me everything

Marching Orders

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

MARCHING ORDERS

Que sera sera what will be will be what?
(Shuffle it up)
You get to where you get
On the backs of those you trust

Life is pretty
Life is Jobim in a glass
(swallow it down)

From nitty gritty
Comes law and order
There’s more than one way to get to Mordor

It’s hard to shake
These marching orders may just be stapled to my
DNA
‘Cause I keep on going
Going til there’s no where left to go

Us n them n him n her like oil n vinegar
Brother Love your royal doves have turned to packs of dogs

Do you feel frisky?
This is clearly déjà vu
(play it again)

I know it’s risky to be faithful and happy
From cradle to grave
Just when you think you can’t believe in anything

It’s hard to shake
These marching orders may just be stapled to my
DNA
‘Cause I keep on going
Going til there’s no where left to go

Are you tender-hearted? Are you wicked in the hand?
Or just (a little) fancy-footed when it comes to making a stand?

Don’t take it serious
Life’s a rabbit in a hat
(Where did it go?)

And aren’t u curious
downright delirious
Can’t stop from spinning around the same thing

It’s hard to shake
These marching orders may just be stapled to my
DNA
‘Cause I keep on going
Going til there’s no where left to go….

Empires of Straw (II)

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

EMPIRES OF STRAW

Nothing spells disaster
Like trying to show you’re good to go
Hoping that your master
Will notice you and all you do for the sake of love

But love was like a mother
Who can’t be found or won’t come round
And you just want your comfort
Soft and strange like rebel angels following to cover you
Following to cover you

Go on set your fires on empires of straw
Go on let your fires lay waste of us all
Even the oceans of blue
Can’t help but burn for you

Maybe you’re a fighter
Staring down your battleground
Frozen by the sight of
A thousand wounds it’s what we do
For the sake of love
For the sake of love

Go on set your fires on empires of straw
Go on let your fires lay waste of us all
Even the oceans of blue
Can’t help but burn for you
Instrumental

If I could find a way to thread an army through a needle into my veins well then maybe I could be that heroine

Go on set your fires on empires of straw
Go on let your fires lay waste of us all
Even the oceans of blue
Can’t help but burn for you
Even the oceans of blue
Can’t help but burn for you

Summer Escape

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

SUMMER ESCAPE

This year’s vacation it’s postcards of airplanes for you
Everything’s balmy but I’m bored as a palm tree for you

Poolside philosophy is all very flattering
I’m brilliant in flip flops and cooked by high noon
Who’s going to save me from melting away

It all depends
On you my friend
The star of my summer escape

This year’s vacation it’s snapshots of Vegas for you
But I’m out of focus cause all I can picture is you

How is it possible to feel so nolstagic
For somebody’s face I haven’t even seen yet?
You’ll come in your finest of hot air balloons

It all depends
On you my friend
The star of my summer escape

Here’s the thing
It’s the trickiest thing
Oh it’s magical
In my mind we’re larger than life
Can we live up?
Can we live up to this?

Great expectations, it’s all very baffling
Like reading your epilogue before the first page
Or maybe your blockbuster’s made for TV

It all depends
On you my friend
The star of my summer escape

Beautiful You

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

BEAUTIFUL YOU

I’ll move onto higher ground
Can you hear me now
Am I in your thoughts somehow?
No routine or rhythm to keep
And I try to sleep
But my body’s steeped in you

You’re so beautiful to me
So beautiful

Black crow in a dove’s disguise
My eyes seem to see
But they lie obsessively
Show me an atrocity
Or the sweetest thing
And I’ll only think of you

You’re so beautiful to me
So beautiful
So beautiful
So beautiful

I give my only breath to this last confession
I scatter to the wind my slim possessions
I lost my shadow to this strange obsession
Obsession

I’m sure I’ve crossed the line this time
You’re a perfect liar
You make my failing eyes untrue
No sense in these thoughts I fear
Like a house of mirrors
In a circus made of you

You’re so beautiful to me
So beautiful
So beautiful
So beautiful

Punchline

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

PUNCHLINE

If we were living in a joke we’d know exactly how it goes
Cause we’ve heard it a hundred times
You know the one I mean…
The bear in the bar on the trampoline
While the bartender says something politically a propos

Remember the time I kissed you hard on the mouth
I think I knocked you off your guard
You said I laughed like bells tinged with melancholy
Funny, that’s how I feel now

But where do we go from here
Where do we go from here?

I think the punchline is somewhere in the silence
The punchline is everything I meant to say
But lost my words
Or found a flaw
So here we are

If we were living in a joke we’d know exactly how it goes
Cause we all have a part to play
You’d be the debonnaire with the top shelf drink and a cold hard stare
And I’d do tapdance just to see if you could laugh….

But the punchline is somewhere in the silence
The punchline is everything I meant to say
But lost my words
Or found a flaw
So here we are:

Waiting on a punchline

Starry Night (Feels So Good)

Written By: Andrea Wittgens

STARRY NIGHT

No need to make it, so complicated
Try hard will drive your babies away
Pushing for something rewards me with nothing
Better off letting those tides roll in
Tides roll in

Honey run and grab a shovel baby’s gone and lost her marbles on the side of the road
Started off with good intentions but then in the end I kind of lost control of the load
It’s so comical, what we do to fit in
Sweat with the best, race the rat out the nest
I can run it faster than you

Well it’d feel so good to say Bye Bye world
I’m leaving you
Pack all my hopes in a box for good
I’m off but –

Starry Night I know why I can’t be through with you
Starry Night I know why I can’t be through with you

Rocking and raging may keep me from aging
But it’s not going to keep those demons away
Building a rocket can pad both my pockets
But who’s going to teach my children to play
Beg as they may

Honey run and grab a shovel baby’s gone and made a fortune selling trash for the king
Drag a dirty dollar out from underneath your collar
Buy your love and all seven sins
It’s so trivial what we think should matter most afterall
Gather up your little tokens, smash then til their bruised and broken
Find your own way home from the ball

Well it’d feel so good to say Bye Bye world
I’m leaving you
Pack all my hopes in a box for good
I’m off but –

Starry Night I know why I can’t be through with you
Starry Night I know why I can’t be through with you

Creature Feature

CREATURE FEATURE –

What we need
Is a dream
And the good sense to think it through
The courage to make the move

But what we are
What we really are
Cartoon heroes taking calls
from deserted phone booths behind the mall

Ominous skies streaked with things to come
Happy mutations for everyone
Til the day, til the day the dream goes sour
And turn to poison visions of lizards tearing cities down

Creature Feature
Look at what we’re breeding in the backyard pool
Creature Feature
What started out as innovation
Quickly turned into an invasion

It begins
With a simple sin
A vague suspicion
That everything worthwhile is hidden

In the cracks
Of your wall
Poetry and dreams will follow
And swallow you whole

We could be drama queens in poker face
Strike a deathly pose just to raise the stakes
This is it - our finest hour
Kiss your television and pray for science fiction

Creature Feature
Look at what we’re breeding in the backyard pool
Creature Feature
What started out as innovation
Quickly turned into an invasion

La la la la…

In the skyline
There’s a lifeline
It’s like a loop hole
very few find
when the world moves
it’s something to escape to
somewhere out of bounds
your mind is running over
with visions that you found

Strange enough to make the world go hush
Tongue-tied and stupefied and waiting for the rush

Creature Feature
Look at what we’re breeding in the backyard pool
Creature Feature
What started off as innovation quickly turned into an invasion

Creature Feature
Look at what we’re breeding in the backyard pool
And on the rooftops
all the broken-hearted people
Holding up a sign saying “take me, take me take me”

Creature Feature
Look at what we’re breeding in the backyard pool
Creature Feature
What started off as innovation quickly turned into an invasion

Everything Is Relative To You

EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE TO YOU

If I’ve got slightest notions
They say you are the one
Two Three Four Five and counting…

And when you’re inches from me
Or off my hemisphere
This pleasure’s for the measuring

Lately everything is relative to you
Maybe all the laws of gravity will change their minds and all that binds us to Tragedy

If I’m so wise and cryptic
Why can’t I crack the code
Each time I try I stumble

And this feels like revolution
This feels like everyday
Matter a fact and rough n tumble

Lately everything is relative to you
Maybe all the laws of gravity will change their minds
and all that binds us to Tragedy

Someone’s counting all our days
Facts and figures every hour
The only numbers I hold true
Distance from you to me
From me to you

Lately everything is relative to you
Maybe all the laws of gravity will change their minds and all that binds
Lately everything is relative to you

Cardboard Cutouts

CARDBOARD CUTOUTS

It’s the scratching around that’s gonna take us down
We’re getting much too dirty for the diamonds in the rough
Fake your stuff and be a poster girl of something

But that’s how I landed in a corner on Monday
I was slouching round with cynics running off my mouth
I can tell you how it is but then I sit it out
Uh huh huh huh

And the cardboard cutouts say you’re saving face but
They don’t really know how it feels
The Cardboard cutouts say you’re losing faith
They don’t really know how it feels
They don’t really know how it feels

So let’s snap to attention and forget all of the mention
Of the diamonds in the rough cause if you dream it hard enough
Well then it must be true and we all gonna go home happy
I can be the cake and eat it too

Or I show up naked with my label sticking out
Like a beta kappa martyr gentlemen start your engines snarling
I get off on the races but I won’t come clean
Uh huh huh huh

And the cardboard cutouts say you’re saving face
They don’t really know how it feels
Gotta nerve coming round this place when
They don’t even know how it feels
They don’t even know how it feels
I just want to know how it feels
Don’t you wanna know how it feels?

I know what they’re gonna say I know what they’re gonna say….
Who says it should be that way who says it should be that way…

And the cardboard cutouts say you’re saving face
They don’t really know how it feels
Gotta nerve coming round this place when
They don’t even know how it feels
They don’t even know how it feels
I just want to know how it feels
Don’t you want to know how it feels?
