Bio

One of the outstanding Costa Rican guitarists of his generation, Andrés Saborío began to study guitar in 1996 and immediately decided to dedicate his studies and life’s work entirely to music. This decision took him to the University of Costa Rica and later to Indiana University, where he earned his master’s degree in 2005.

His teachers and mentors have been Manfred Sauter, Mario Solera, Jorge Luis Zamora, Ernesto Bitetti and Nuccio D’Angelo.

Andrés regularly perform as a soloist and as a chamber musician in diverse settings, continually exploring new musical styles that complement his classical training.

Andrés has given recitals as a soloist, as a member of the Orquesta de Guitarras de Costa Rica (Guitar Orchestra of Costa Rica), and as a chamber musician. He has performed in Costa Rica’s main theaters as well as in the United States, Mexico, Holland, Spain, Germany, Nicaragua, Panama, Bolivia and Cuba.

His awards as a classical guitarist include: first place in the “V Festival y Concurso Internacional de Guitarra de Cochabamba, Bolivia (2008)”, third place in the “I Concurso Internacional de Guitarra de Culiacan, Mexico (2008)” and second place in the “Seventh Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America, Indiana University (2004)”.

In 2009 Andrés formed the “Andrés Saborío Trio” with bassist Luis Alvaro Zamora and percussionist Ivan Barquero, and produced their debut CD “LatinoAmerica”. Their repertoire includes standards from Latin American popular music, as well as classical compositions for guitar newly arranged for the trio.

He has worked as an instructor in the Alajuela Municipal Conservatory in Costa Rica, Indiana University in the United States, and the Escuela Superior de Guitarra in San Jose, Costa Rica, of which he is a founding member.

Andrés currently performs solo recitals and with his trio, teaches guitar at the University of Costa Rica and at the Universidad Nacional, and maintains a private studio.
