Biography

Andrew McCollum Brasfield (Betts)
Brasfield’s latest art project is to release his natural father's color slides that number over only through the world wide web because of carbon dioxides in our environment.
McCollum Eugene Brasfield was a baby-boomer generation religious volunteer in the 1960s, in Tanzania, Africa, then Japan, Asia. The color slides have been sent to India for cost effective scanning.
With his mother and sister they decided not to release the art project for over three decades.
Brasfield’s song “Love Fills Your Needs” was created to prevent suicide; the form of death his biological father took. If there is popular success an undetermined percentage of the proceeds from the song will continue prevention methods.
His Dad is the Rev. Robert H. Betts, and now retired. Andrew is now the youngest of four children with a stepsister and a stepbrother.
In 1994 Brasfield was mentioned for his poetry in the annual poetry contest by the Philadelphia City Paper. Many of his songs originated from freeform poems or in lyric writing sessions. He has hand written several marble composition books of poetry; and has written poems, lyrics and sheet music on computer. He holds literary and photography copyrights and registrations that have not been released.
In 2000-01 he worked as a music correspondent at The Daily Local News, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Subjects he reported on included The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band with Double Trouble legends bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton; folk guitarist Chris Whitley, now deceased; songs on vinyl records on the jukebox at local bars and taverns; and local music venues and bands.
In 2002 he founded his zine Pennsylvania’s Path. He wrote reviews on blues artists such as Bonnie Raitt and Johnny Winter. He released over 50 issues over four years.
In the late 1990s the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, or OVR, paid for a grading of his self taught guitar playing at West Chester Music Store, in Pennsylvania. Brasfield had been playing Open Mic Nights for years with only a handful of booked paying gigs. He was independently graded as an intermediate blues rhythm and folk guitarist by classically trained instructor C.T. McDonough. Brasfield first learned guitar from a chord poster on a dreadnaught.
He performed gospel songs as part of a Hurricane Katrina benefit for The Salvation Army, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Years earlier he voluntarily received free food from the organization; and was later a resident in their men’s homeless shelter for six months.
In 2005 with OVR financial support he studied music, theater and art at West Chester University. He joined the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County, Pennsylvania, as a bass singer and professional actor. He has written four television fiction comedy series concepts and first episode scripts; or TV pilots.
