"New ‘Buzzin’ Interview w/ @AndrewDavisII"

Tell us about you and your movement

My name is Andrew Davis II. I’m an MC born and raised in Hartford, CT – currently residing in Chicago, IL. I’m a 2007 grad of Northwestern University, that’s what brought me to Chicago. I’ve spent the past two years building a real movement behind my music. The team is strong, man. Team ADII is represented in Connecticut, New York, Chicago and New Orleans – and definitely growing. Right now the viral push has been of utmost priority – getting blog exposure everywhere we can. That’s been going well over the past few months. We hope to build on that and take it straight to the top.

When did you start to develop your artistry?

I started writing in 2nd grade. I used to write a lot of poems and short stories as a kid. I didn’t necessarily look at my poetry as “rap”, but I always made sure it rhymed, you know. As I got older I got more and more into writing raps. I used to be really shy with my raps man, (lol). I started high school at 12, so I was nervous that the older kids wouldn’t feel me. I started recording and hopping on records at 16. I also did my first live performance at 17. It was a talent show at a prep school I attended after I graduated high school – Salisbury School. I would say that this talent show performance was when I knew that music was my passion…my career.

Who are some of your musical influences?

So one of my earliest musical influences is definitely Prince! (Lol) Sounds crazy, but my father told me that he used to take headphones, place them on my mother’s stomach while she was pregnant with me, and play the Purple Rain album for me. As a kid, my father kept a pretty diverse collection of music that had strong influence on me; everything from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and James Brown to jazz artists like Joe Sample, George Howard, and Stanley Clarke. I was even influenced by artists like Average White band, The Talking Heads, the Ohio Players…man I can go on for days. The point, I guess, is that I have an old soul when it comes to music. My influences have been very diverse.

What current projects are you working on?

I’m wrapping up my debut EP which will be entitled “My Dream” and it is scheduled for release in mid-April. This is essentially the closest thing to my first album – it’s my baby. We’re promoting the single off the EP which is also entitled “My Dream” and the video for that drops February 21st (my other baby). My team and I are also working on a “My Dream” clothing collection with NY and Chicago based clothing company Dynastee Clothing Co. Be on the lookout for that Fall of this year.

How are you planning to ‘Get Your Buzz Up’?

The most important ingredient of our plan is GOOD music that myself and my team all believe in. There’s no substitute for good, quality product. With the My Dream EP, the singles, and videos the next ingredient is aggressive marketing. My team works hard to think creatively outside the box – what AREN’T other artists doing and how can we market our music in a unique way that makes our movement stand out? It’s time to shake up the world man, and you can’t do that by doing what everyone else is doing. We have dope product, creative minds at work on the marketing, and the money to back up every statement we make. We out here.

Where can we find you online?

My fans can get the most frequent and up-to-date news on me and my movement via my fan page (www.facebook.com/AndrewDavisII) and my twitter page (@AndrewDavisII). My website www.AndrewDavisII.com will be launching soon as well.

Any shout outs or Plugs?

Shout outs to my family, all my fans and followers. Big shouts to #TeamADII, man 2011 is going to be one for the books. Be sure to look for and request my single “My Dream” – video drops February 21st. Finally, be on the lookout for my debut EP – “My Dream” this April.

"Andrew Davis II - Who Dat Freestyle"

My homie Mr. Davis dropped this off in my inbox last night…a freestyle to Light Skinned Jermaine’s Who Dat (how ironic – light skinned rappers). As he continues to work on his New To The City mixtape, this dude has been going hard on his performances even performing at our mixtape release party from a couple weeks ago. He has a good show, if you get a chance to check him out in Chicago, make sure you do. Anyway, check out the new 16s from ADII…

"Andrew Davis II - Grown Up Baller x On To The Next One"

The homie Andrew blessed me with a couple tracks of his, definitely a good dude you want to get a listen of and remember. The first joint Grown Up Baller was produced by KC the BeatSmith and then he hops on Jay’s On To The Next One. Give him some feedback people tell him what you think!

"Andrew Davis II - Dear Summer Freestyle x Just Because"

I got a chance to talk to Andrew at the Freddie Gibbs concert a week ago and I got a chance to pick his brain about what he had coming up as far as a tape and he told me about his upcoming New To The City mixtape which would be coming soon. The inspiration behind the name of the mixtape talks about how he’s new to Chicago in being from the East Coast and as he continues to figure out his way through life in in the Windy City. So a lot of this music is personal to him specifically and he told me that he has alot of tracks on deck and is currenly in the process of choosing what he wants to be on the tape.

Well, we’re looking forward to it here on WIMH and we were fortunate enough to get 2 tracks that he wanted to leak a little early from the tape. I was specifically drawn to Dear Summer as it is one of my favorite Jay-Z tracks but definitely also catch a listen at the up-tempo Just Because track. Comment and let Andrew know what you think…

"Andrew Davis II - Pops You Told Me"

I was just kicking it with the homie Andrew earlier today and among the ideas we threw around and him performing at our showcase and party next Sunday, he passed on this track that he did for his father for Father’s Day…

Andrew’s musical influences include rap veterans such as: Ice Cube, Nas, Jay-Z, Big Punisher, Cam’ron, Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden, and Lil Wayne. Davis also seeks inspiration from music icons that his parents and even grandparents grew up on: James Brown, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Rick James.
