Bio

Philadelphia based musician, Andrew Lipke is due to release his debut album The Way Home… through Drexel University’s student-run record label, MAD Dragon Records (Ryko Distribution) on February 20, 2007. Produced by Emmy Award winning composer, and current Drexel University professor, Jim Klein; The Way Home… is written and arranged entirely by Andrew Lipke. His melodic focus and powerful emotional lyrics bridge the gap between singer-songwriters and alterative rockers.

Lipke started playing the piano at age of five in South Africa. Moving to America in 1987, he began writing songs on the guitar. Musical endeavors during his teenage years fostered his passion for music; after high school he moved to Philadelphia to earn a degree in music composition from the University of the Arts. During his college years, Andrew formed the band Metagroove, later known as Revisor, and over the next five years garnered regional and national acclaim for his gifts as a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Metagroove soon disbanded when Andrew realized his strong desire for a more intimate delivery of his music.

“Performing for me is a chance to bring people into my world for a little while… it’s really a very sensual exchange of energy when the situation is right.” Influenced by everything from Bach, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin to modern day classics like Radiohead and The Shins; Lipke decided to focus on his solo career. Stripping away excess elements gave immediate focus to the range and power of his voice, and brought a refreshing clarity to his subtle and meaningful lyrics. In 2004 Lipke wrote, arranged and produced his self released EP Ghosts. This release garnered Lipke local success as well as comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright. Lipke continues to be active in the local music scene not only with his solo career, but also with his project Franz Shubert and playing keyboard in the Led Zeppelin tribute band Get the Led Out. His newest project is his MAD Dragon Debut The Way Home….

Written and arranged entirely by Andrew Lipke, The Way Home… changes textures and genres with each track. He moves from simple guitar and vocal tracks like “My One and Only” to alternative rock epics such as “Moving Back to Paradise”. Lipke further moves genres and textures to the powerful and emotionally charged “Standing Over You” and “Untitled Song #1”. Lipke says “My songs are essentially a reaction to what’s going on around me and inside me.”

“I love music like I love light and air and other things I can’t live without. I remember hearing music in the car when I was five or six and being completely and totally transported to another dimension. I never get tired of trying to figure out the mystery of why music has so much power and the thrill of first hearing something in your head and later having the same sound come in through your ears is astounding, absolutely incredible… it never gets old.” This love of music is heard and felt in every emotional note and lyric from The Way Home…, and will be heard in all of Lipke’s musical endeavors for years to come.
