Bio

In his early years, André Rio started his life as composer and singer. Aged 9, this grandson, son and nephew of musicians was able to sing in students festivals. Aged 17 he was already a well known interpreter of festivals in Pernambuco and sang in pubs and nightclubs in Recife. As time went by he became better known and started to have his own concerts in theaters in Pernambuco. His first record was released in 1992 under great influence of MPB and it was a great hit in radios. The LP “André Rio e a Banda Modelo do Meu Terno” came out with his own songs along with songs from his partners and could show his talent together with his poetry. In the same year André Rio released his compact for carnival named “Queimando a Massa” (burning the crowd). In 1994 André Rio recorded his second record: “Presença” in which the song “Sou Teu Amor” became name of a “ Carnival troupe” on the week before carnival in 1995 whose main attractions were André Rio and Daniela Mercury. Despite being daring this project reached its aim. André took the Frevo with all its colors to the “trio elétrico” (kind of float). In that same year the project “Me Leva” (take me with you) went by the out-of-time carnivals in the Northeast through João Pessoa, Fortaleza, Terezina, Maceio and Natal. The experience of playing and divulging the music from Pernambuco in “trio elétrico” led André Rio to record another cd called “Me Leva” in 1996. Released in 1998 cd “Tentação” was a huge success in the carnival of Pernambuco of that year. it was amid the fuss of carnival with his frevo “O Bicho Vai Pegar” that André Rio received his first gold record award. His CD “ao vivo” (live) was recorded in a show in Recife with special participation of Alceu Valença. The diversity of André Rio’s repertoire has been gathering a public of fans abroad even greater. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 André took off new flights. He traveled to Europe carrying a number of musical projects. And together with Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho and Nana Vasconcelos he took part in the tour “Pernambuco em Canto” in the following festivals: “Latinamericando” in Milan, Italy; “Ritmos” in Porto, Portugal; “Viva Afro-Brasil” in Tübingen, Germany; “Züri Fäscht” (Zurich City Event), Switzerland; “Fête de Genève” (Geneva City Event), Switzerland and “Jazz a Vienne”, France, among others. He took part also in the biggest music festival in the world presenting his show in Auditorium Stravinski in the Montreux Jazz Festival. In the following years he added other sounds to his work as a result of his musical experience abroad. On that occasion he released cds: “Farol de Olinda”, and “Levada da Embolada” which have a more modern language – mixing regional with world music. In December 2006, celebrating the 100 years of the “Frevo music”, the singer released the CD “Cem Carnavais” (a hundred carnivals). In 2007, celebrating 20 years of career, he recorded the DVD “Pernambuco Sou” at UFPE Theatre in Recife city with participation of more than 140 people among artists, musicians and technicians. In this show André not only made a re-reading of his former songs, gave a touch to his greatest hits and sang songs of other composers from Pernambuco but also made new songs for this project. The result was a jolly, lively and contagious DVD. As for his new project André says: “Pernambuco Sou” is not only a summary of my career but, furthermore, it is my statement of love for Pernambuco.
In 2008 the project – “Rapsódia Nordestina” – was launched as a result of the union of André Rio with “Trio Sotaque” – composed by musicians Luciano Magno, Fabio Valois and Raimundo Batista. Rapsodia Nordestina is above all, an innovative and daring reading of different pieces from musical and poetical work of the great representatives of the northeast of Brazil culture under the view of these four sensitive musicians.
