Did You Know:

Kuncl was born and raised in North Carolina.

Andy Kuncl has been an artists for almost all of his life. He was in the choir as a young boy, set off on a lucrative singer/songwriter career sometime later, went on hiatus to become an organic farmer and food advocate among other things, and is now back into the swing of things with his latest release, Musik/Dance/Love, a five track album of songs that tend to go off on directions all their own.

The first track off the album is Tried 2 Resist, which has a very solid indie pop sound to it and displays Kuncl’s vocal and producing talents. Subtle playful guitar works in the background underneath layers of drum sequences, and synth warbles. Of the four tracks on the album that are supplied with vocals this one feels the most complete, meshing vocals and music well together, it is also the shortest of the five tracks.

Track two, Better Then This, feels like a throw back track to older 80’s pop radio. Think Breathe or their contemporaries. It feels just a bit off in some area’s, like the vocals and the music are missing each other by a fraction of second, but you won’t really notice unless your really looking for it. Despite it feeling like a throwback I really like the chorus in this one as well as the break down at the back end of the track.

In Your Arms follows the same suit producing a very 80’s throwback feel. The synths here are reminiscent of the early electronic acts of the 80’s with soft melodic vocals. Dare I say this track reminded me of the infamous Rick Astley in the vocals department. Style, not range.

Addicted 2 My Love is more of the R&B flavor. It reminded me a bit of Sade but it also had a strange boy band flair to it. It’s a great track in any respect, but like the last two songs it’s not easy to wrap your head around what makes the song good right away unless you were big into the sound of 80’s pop radio.

Closing out the album is Thank You, a completely instrumental track that puts on display Kuncl’s ability to lay down a beat and layer it with just a plethora of sound, or so it feels. If you had any doubt about Kuncl’s love for the art of making music let this one track put your doubts to rest. Thank You is a busy number with guitar, fiddle, xylophone (possibly), the subtle but persistent use of hand claps, and a diverse formula of synthesized noises popping up here and there. A great way to close out the album.

"[RPM] from 3KB Records Musik/Dance/Love Andy Kuncl"

review by justintime

Musik/Dance/Love is the most recent release from Andy Kuncl. The music is Synth Pop and Alternative Dance with a heavy R&B influence along with Kuncl’s impassioned vocals. There are hints of Prince with elements of 80’s Funk. An interesting release.

"MUSIC INTERVIEW: ANDY KUNCL Speed Date: Five Years in the Making, from Baked Goods to Music/Dance/Love"

By: Andrew Shaw
April 18, 2012

In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at a click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and learning something about current musical artists who represent the best of what they do, Buzzine has set a table and would like to introduce you to your Speed Date:

What is your name and where are you from?

Andy Kuncl - I grew up in North Cack (aka North Carolina) and currently I'm kickin it in Bushwick (Brooklyn, NY).

Where are you right now?

I'm listening to an awesome thunderstorm from my apartment studio (The Fox Den). Living in San Francisco for 6 years I missed this sound.

Hey, do you have a cam on your phone, can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?

Sure...

If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?

She'd definitely say that I'm a workaholic (just like her), that I'm very passionate about art and nature, and that you'll look forward to my baked goodies when your birthday rolls around.

Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?

I'm celebrating and promoting Muisk/Dance/Love - an EP released on March 20, 2012. The 5 songs on this EP are part of a larger body of work which I've been crafting over the past 5 years (if not more).

What 3 words best describe your musical style?

Emotive, honest, celebratory.

What sentence best sums up your latest album?

I'm just gonna copy and paste what my friend Bob wrote about the EP:

"You'll hear strains of classic soul…multi-layered dance and hip-hop…wind and flowing streams…African rhythms…folksy backwoods… harmonies that reveal hints of familiarity, but are refreshingly original. It'll make you dance, remember love found and lost, smile, sigh, feel connected and human." (Oh yeah that's two sentences…oops ;-D)

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

I'm really proud of Musik/Dance/Love and that I've stuck to pursuing my dreams.

What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?

I've been listening and dancing to a lot of house music lately.

Who is your musical hero?

This one is tough…I can't decide - Janet Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bjork, Thom Yorke, Phil Collins, Madonna . . .

When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?

I am a performer and I love to be on stage. There is nothing quite like it. I have also fallen in love with producing and recording. But I think being able to connect with people live is what makes me happiest.

What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?

Well, most recently, I was pulled up on stage by Feist to dance for "My Moon My Man" as "Skeleton Man" during her show at BAM on November 2 (The Day Of The Dead).

Where do you see yourself in five years?

On stage, in the studio, doing more of the same, spreading love and joy and being true to myself.

What is your motto?

"If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else." - RuPaul

Anything more to add?

Happy Spring. Wanna go on another date?

Where online can fans find out more about you?

"Andy Kuncl - Musik/Dance/Love (album stream)"

'musik/dance/love' is the culmination of 13 years of spiritual, intellectual and musical growth since Andy Kuncl’s last album. You’ll hear strains of classic soul...multi-layered dance and hip-hop...wind and flowing streams...African rhythms...folksy backwoods...harmonies that reveal hints of familiarity, but are refreshingly original. It’ll make you dance, remember love found and lost, smile, sigh, feel connected and human.

As a child, Andy Kuncl would come home from boys choir rehearsals and spend hours recording three part harmonies on his boombox, teaching himself how to play Lionel Richie, Phil Collins, and Harry Connick Jr. songs on the piano, and learning all the dance moves to Janet Jackson and Madonna videos.

It's no surprise the multi-talented North Carolina-raised artist found his calling as a singer-songwriter, dancer, and music producer.

At the age of 19, inspired by the unique style of Ani DiFranco, and the loss of his grandmother, Andy picked up a guitar and began what would become a successful career as an acoustic singer-songwriter. Over the next five years Andy toured extensively on the East Coast and recorded 2 full-length albums, Too Quickly (1998) and Who I Am (1999). In 1999, Andy won first place at the annual N. Carolina Songwriters Competition. This phase in Andy's musical career culminated in what would ultimately be a disillusioning experience with Trans Continental Records (shortly before their legal woes). Pursuing a different passion all together, Andy spent the next 10 years cultivating his interests in organic farming, food politics, and his dance career.

Transitioning from organic farmer in N. Carolina to San Franciscan, Andy performed as a dancer in film ('Maggots and Men'), with the hip-hop dance company Loose Change, internationally renowned 'Trannyshack!', and acclaimed choreographer Ronald K. Brown (Evidence) at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

During this time Andy continued to write new songs and independently developed his skills as a music producer, as well as earning his certification as an audio engineer from SoundArts (SF, CA).

In July 2010 Andy moved to New York City where he has collaborated and performed with artists such as Chino Maurice, Crimson, and Margaux Reynolds. Andy currently lives in Brooklyn and had set his new studio EP Musik/Dance/Love for a March 20, 2012 release via 3KB Records.

"Andy Kuncl's Musik/Dance/Love"

Camille Hansen

Andy Kuncl's newest album, Musik/Dance/Love, entertains his audience with an instrumental ensemble and soft romantic tone. Kuncl's album is a collection of 13 years of spiritual awakening and came out on March 20, 2012. This album is infused with romantic lyrics, classical soul and hip-hop components.

In Kuncl's song, "Take Me in Your Arms," Andy repeats, “Take me in your arms,” over and over again. He also croons, "Please give me some patience,” in his song. Kuncl’s soft melodious voice brings a touch of his soul to this romantic ballad and instills hope for a happy outcome with his words, “Give me some patience." This song is accompanied by a string guitar and a soft beat.

Kuncl filled this album with songs that you can dance to and remember love by. Though the songs reveal a softness about them, Kuncl adds spice to his beat with a folksy feel and an African tone. The lyrics leave you pining for those you love and, yet, have a refreshing take on romance.

If you are looking for memorable love songs with a twist, Music/Dance/Love will satisfy and pique your interest with delicate rhythm and soulful lyrics. It will make a great new addition to your music collection and is definitely worth the price. - The Celebrity Cafe

"Friday, April 6, 2012 Andy Kuncl Releases New Record + MP3"

A couple of weeks ago, Andy Kuncl released his new EP Musik/Dance/Love via 3KB Records. I would describe his sound as danceable pop so if you're prone to dancing around the room when you hear something that inspires you to shake your 'groove thang,' then perhaps you shouldn't listen to the EP at work. For a taste of what you're in for with this record, we have for you the infectious "In Your Arms." Grab it at the bottom of the post in our MP3 Grab. - Quirky New York Chick

Ahhh, refreshing, like a cold glass of water after a hot summer day. This is such a unique mix of genres and a great combination of sounds. I’m diggin’ the electro feel here, but even more than that is my interest in the funky sounds and the mix of jazz. My favorite, “Thank You” has a tribal feel to it, like you’re drifting out into the sky, going exactly where you want to be. If the sounds aren’t enough to keep your ears aroused, the vocals are on point and make for an overall unreal listening experience. The title of the album is Musik/Dance/Love and it couldn’t be a more fitting title. Music that can stimulate your emotions is always a nice find. I almost forgot…the artist’s name is Andy Kuncl. - That's Glitchy
