"EGR native Andy Lange gets song on TNT's 'Leverage,'"

Back in the old -- way old -- days of The Grand Rapids Press, there was a feature called "Quickly Down the Rapids." Here's my new-millennium musical version for the week:

Song makes TV appearance
Andy Lange, 26, a 2002 graduate of East Grand Rapids High School, has done everything from "living at sea singing on a cruise ship" to working for the Electric Entertainment media production company in Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, his music will get some major national TV exposure when TNT's "Leverage" features his song "Not Sure Yet" in the opening episode of the second season of the show (starring Timothy Hutton).

The singer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, who's lived in North Hollywood since 2006 after graduating from Michigan State University, also has a new CD, "Wherever You Wanna Go," being released on iTunes, with a song, "Rockets," that recently snagged a finalist award in the Great American Songwriting Contest. A more acoustic album from Lange is slated to follow in a few months. Take a listen to "Not Sure Yet" right here at "Sound Check."

"Singer-Songwriter Andy Lange brings music to 'Leverage'"

His song 'Not Sure Yet' was featured in the season two premiere of LEVERAGE

Anyone who watched the season two premiere of LEVERAGE may have been wondering “what was that song playing during the scene at the end with Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton) in the bar?

Well, the answer is “Not Sure Yet” by Andy Lange, an up and coming singer-songwriter whose new album WHEREVER YOU WANNA GO is currently available on iTunes and other music retailers.

For Lange, having his song placed in the episode happened by accident – he’s actually a sound engineer on LEVERAGE and he passed his CD along to the show’s executive producer and director Dean Devlin.

“I was walking around office and Dean stops in the hallway and he says ‘your stuff is amazing and I’m going to put it in the show,’” recalls Lange. “I didn’t know what to say.”

The beauty of “Not Sure Yet” is its simplicity, as Lange explains he wrote it about his own life.

“It’s about growing up and making big decisions and not sure you’re on the right track, but everything feels like it’s going to turn out all right despite the bumps along the way,” he adds.

According to Devlin, this was a perfect fit for the show – particularly the journey Nate will be taking this season.

“There’s not that many words [to the song],” says Lange. “The words repeat, repeat, but the song is really in the instrumentation. It builds and builds and there’s a really cool crescendo in there. It was a short poem I wrote initially and the song came together when I put all the instruments in there.”

Andy Lange's music may be rooted in the stylings of artists like Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but his songwriting transcends his bluesy guitar riffs in its confluence of catchy melodies and a poppy electric spin. The dancing of Lange's dexterous fingers along the fretboard once defined his style. But as his sense of orchestration has matured, the electric thrashes now fit into a melodic grid of complex vocal harmonies, intricate rhythms, and an experimental implementation of sounds and samples. Lange's prolific output has lead to comparisons to such pop visionaries as The Beatles and The Beach Boys, but he doesn't shy from a more contemporary studio sound captured by bands like The Postal Service. Perhaps the inception of Lange's music in the blues genre explains his poignant and often soul-baring lyrics, and his fragile, confident vocals offer a perfect complement. Recently, Lange's song "Rockets" earned him a Finalist Honor Award in the Great American Songwriting Contest. Recently, Andy's song "Not Sure Yet" has become a featured song on TNT's hit TV series "Leverage." Andy's debut album, "Wherever You Wanna Go," is now available on all major online music retailers.
