Bio

Angela Rossi - vocalist

One of the most versatile singers living in Boston, Angela Rossi’s unique repertoire traverses traditional, classical and jazz genres and explores over five centuries of music. A native of Milan, Italy, Ms. Rossi has frequently performed with the renown Tiziano Tononi Jazz Trio as well as her own Angela Rossi Quartet, appearing in Jazz Festivals and clubs in Rome, Florence, Paris, Iseo, Locarno, and Lugano. She has been featured in a weekly radio program in Milan called “Sisters in Jazz” with her ensemble and has frequently been a soloist with Francesca Oliveri’s Gospel Choir in Milan, as well as with the Instabile Orchestra in Rome led by composer/conductor Giancarlo Schiaffini.

In 2001 she performed the role of La Jeune Fille Americaine with the Portofranco Multicolor Orchestra in a historic restaging of Eric Satie and Jean Cocteau’s provocative PARADE, which combined dance, voice, and orchestra, using original costume designs by Pablo Picasso. A musical suite of Parade was recorded and issued in 2001 [Materiali Sonori].

In 2005 she performed a concert of the repertoire of Billie Holiday at the Terrazza Della Locaanda in Florence in conjunction with the release of the book “Lady Day, Lady Night – Interpretare Billie Holiday,” by author and renown jazz music critic Giorgio Rimondi, also a writer for Musica Jazz and All About Jazz magazines.

In the Unites States Ms. Rossi enjoys a diverse performance schedule sharing the stage with artists such as Lisa Thorson, African vocalist Dorothy Matsuoka, the jazz vocal group Syncopation, and collaborates with the Kamal Scott Vocal Theatre, and the JAG Drum and Dance Ensemble led by Joe Galeota. She currently performs as a duo with Russian pianist Maxim Lubarsky in the Boston area and in New York in with pianist Ellen Cantarow and violinist Charles Burnham, a member of the distinguished New York String Trio. In 2004 she performed in recital at the Savanah Music Festival and premiered The Coast of Sirens, a song cycle by Spanish composer Montserrat Mias.

Angela Rossi began singing at age 9. Fluent in Italian, French, English and German she received classical vocal training in Milan at the Civica Scuola di Musica Conservatory and received a diploma in Jazz studies from the Centro Della Musica in 2000. In the United States she studied jazz with artists Sheila Jordan, Kevin Mahogany, Lisa Thorson, Greg Hopkins, Paul Jeffrey, and Cheryl Bentyne (of the Manhattan Transfer) and world music with Jamey Haddad and Alain Mallet. She graduated with honors from Berklee College of Music in 2005, where she was twice awarded the Berklee Achievement Based scholarship. In 2003 Ms. Rossi was a finalist in the prestigious VeriSign American Tradition Competition.

Ms. Rossi is the founder of Newpoli, an Italian folk group based in Boston of two percussionists, two guitars and three singers whose purpose is to rediscover the forgotten Tammurriata, Tarantella and Pizzica rhythms of her native country. In addition to performances with Newpoli, the 2005-2006season includes concerts of opera duets with tenor Kamal Scott and pianist Jeremy Brown, and performances with Montserrat Mias of her recent compositions celebrating her Catalonian heritage.

“I hear hundreds of singers a year in my work as a performer and professional educator. I know when I encounter someone special. Angela Rossi is special; when she sings, be it classical, jazz or pop I know she has a gift that is rare these days: a real original sound”- Lisa Thorson (Vocalist and Professor at Berklee College of Music)
