"Pick of the Week: Angelina Bentley and The Cosmic Party"

Kings & Butterflies

Angelina Bentley and The Cosmic Party starts off their new CD Kings & Butterflies with a catchy and warm tune called “The Farther I Fell (Lullaby)”. This music is considered to be a combination of pop and new age. It gives you a lot of hope for an opening track; in fact it is so memorable that you are actually hoping the rest of the tracks aren’t going to be a letdown.
You get plenty more of the same on the rest of the CD. The airy atmospheric tonality prevails and Bentley’s engaging and distinctive vocal style keeps your insides nice and warm while you ponder the lyrics and how it relates to your own life, and more specifically to the present, past, and future time passages that are going to affect you in some way. It’s a look at you from the inside out courtesy of Angelina Bentley.
“Night Life” has a nice ring to it with a good pace and just enough sprinkling of pop flavors that it could get some heavy airplay as a single. “All God’s Children” is one of the best tracks for its overall musicality and accessibility. Don’t let the title throw you off, it’s not bible beating save a tree stuff, its sensible lyrical content comes across in a subtle yet powerful way. This is all driven by Bentley’s vocal stamp and jangling guitars that would appeal to anyone with a sense for rhythm. “Glitterkids” tries out a little heavier intro but smooth’s out as the track moves on however it is not one of the strongest tunes on the album. I think because of the big change it makes it sound more rock-pop and out of place in this collection of songs. It changes your mood too much a feels to cookie cutter pop for my ears. All is not lost though as the next track “Open the Door” pulls you back in to more familiar ground and everything feels like it has continuity again. I have to say the title track is simply mesmerizing with the vocals and music; it is one of those tracks that define an album as a title track should. It is simple and beautiful like walk on a warm summer day through a field of flowers…Ms. Bentley returns you to paradise within a few seconds.
There is something appealing about Angelina’s voice that is hard to explain or pin down and that is a good thing. Nobody wants to sound identifiable in the sense that listeners know exactly what to expect or are able to compare you to handful of others on the radio. She accomplishes something that many people strive for and never attain, a sound that is all her own and one that will be known as Angelina Bentley’s. That is an extremely important element for success as an indie artist. This band will see the light of day if they keep using that voice as an instrument and vehicle to get where they want to go. They have almost landed so keep an eye on Angelina and The Cosmic Party they could find their way into your consciousness if you listen to one track.
