Angella Irwin has created a repertoire ranging from jazz-inspired to commercial pop songs. Her compositions meld the inheritance of the American songwriter with contemporary world music in a simultaneously powerful and tolerant expression-- "a chaotic world described by a peaceful voice."

Biography

Self-taught on the piano and guitar, Angella Irwin began playing classical music at age 4. Composing original work at 13, her influences were songwriters like Ani DiFranco, CSNY, and Joni Mitchell, among others. Today she is also inspired by musical traditions such as bossa nova, afro-cuban, and flamenco. Always collaborating with musicians from varying international and cultural backgrounds, her lyrics, rhythyms and melodies may transport you far from home to foreign landscapes and lifestyles, while still keeping you grounded in a universal humanity.

Lyrics

Cocoon

Written By: Angella Irwin

Stay away
you've still got some threads to make
leave some space
learn to breath in a bigger place
'cause you've been in
this web you spin
but things change
All of this time you've been
waiting outside my room
you came out too soon
wrap yourself back in your cocoon.
and dream of you
loving madly all the things you do
and watch the world
open up and offer you pearls
'cause you've been in
this web you spin
but things change
all of this time you've been
waiting outside my room
you came out too soon
wrap yourself back in your cocoon.
Oh hey, don't you know
he's smiling now
and his eyes are less hard
and he's showing his cards
with his teeth a little more these days
are filled with grace
you can see his face has changed
like the moon
he's waxed and waned
and he has moved
out of his cocoon
So walk and run
do the things you never would have done
and squirm and writhe
take back all those things you let pass by
'cause you've been in
this web you spin
but things change
now that you know yourself
you can be sure to find
someone of your kind
you can leave your cocoon behind
you can leave your cocoon behind
you can leave your cocoon behind

sangria

Written By: Angella Irwin

he's a contradiction
walking away
even walking away
when he stays
he came around the bend
holding hands with my old friend
holding hands with a dangerous
end I know
and I recognize the way he sweeps the room
with sober eyes
and finds the moon
and the way it pulls the tide
sangria says
it's sweet to be red
and oh how I wish
that I could be too
sangria cries
when anyone tries
to look past her dress
and into her eyes
oh these days
it's getting harder to talk
about this paradox and
it's strange to find
someone so the same
and he's a contradiction
walking away
even walking away when he stays
and he came around the bend
holding hands with my old friend
holding hands with a dangerous
end I know
and I recognize
the way he sweeps the room
with sober eyes
and finds the moon
and the way it pulls the tide
sangria says
it's sweet to be red
and oh how I wish
that I could be too
sangria cries
when anyone tries
to look past her dress
and into her eyes
no I won't ask
to stay forever on a raft
but I do believe
the stars will grieve
for me

petition

Written By: Angella Irwin

I file this petition
I have made some decisions
like I don't want to wait
for your permission
for you to say no
I can't wait around
for you to just let me on down
and I can't hold my breath
see what you do next
see what you do next
see what you do next
I'm stuck on a paper
my name is
stuck under
a number and a staple
with birthplace, gender and race
please sign below on the space
no I can't join this paper chase
and I, I can't wait around
for you to just let me on down
and I can't hold my breath
see what you do next
see what youdo next
see what you do next
and do you know
that I can't take this plane
if you don't let me
and if I try
to swim away
would I make it
before you shot me?
and in your hands
you are holding keys
that I've been craving
and in my hands
all I have is this
petition waving
when I filed this petition
I was angry and driven
and I'll vote down this division
with all the wisdom I've been given
on life, love, and everything good
on the things you shouldn't
and the things you should
oh I, I can't wait around

smooth

Written By: Angella Irwin

smooth day
in the barrio
it's your smooth way
makes me feel
so, so, so so so
new and old too
and I'd run away with you
let's pack
a few things
we'll see what tomorrow brings
but now it's your turn
to choose the way
and I think you're gonna say
smooth day
on the malecon
won't you please play me
a little son
something like
the candle light
that fills up the empty night
something with
a gentle twist
that sweet, stolen gypsy kiss
and now it's your turn
to choose the way
and I think you're gonna say
smooth day
on a raft for two
you don't seem to mind
the wide open blue
I know it's you
wanting to
leave like you always do
but this time
it feels alright
if I come along tonight
or maybe it's you
coming along with me
maybe the difference is
finally the balances
aren't tipped one way
maybe the difference is
we'd both feel like hypocrites
not to say
I want to spend a day
in the old way
with a drink or two
while that band plays
for me and you
and as we leave
the music plays
and fades as we walk away
but the streets
move our feet
in time with the clave's beat

leaves in fall

Written By: Angella Irwin

leaves in fall
falling all around
sky so blue
that I could reach out
and give it to you
we were two
lying in the grass
watching the evening come
blowing on pipes
and banging on drums and
running around
laughing out loud and having fun
skipping through crowds
singing sha-la-la-la
I like this one
driving home
the two of us alone
feels so nice
driving with you into the night
let's not fight
we'll find another way
I like to see you smile
so I'll give you mine
to keep for a while
we'll run around
laughing out loud and having fun
skipping through crowds
singing sha-la-la-la
I like this one
you know that I could be
around the bend for you
and mira mira me
look at you looking at me
there goes gravity shifting
beneath my feet
there goes gravity
lifting beneath my
feet
your love's soft
your love is kind
the whole world melts down
to what you are here
and what you are now
I recall
lying in the leaves
it smells sweet to me
knowing I was
and knowing I'll be
all along
in your love
knowing I was
all along
in your love

I was gonna leave you

Written By: Angella Irwin

I was gonna leave you
'Cause I wasn't sure
What I loved you for
And I was tired of waiting all the time
I had an ache so big that I was sitting down
Just to sit down

I don't want to leave you
But I suspect
That I'm lost in your tornado
And I'm surprised that I'm surprised
That every time you spin yourself around
I'm on the way away

You'd see me in New York
It'd be two years from now
And I would have a voice like velvet falling
All around you
I would have a voice like velvet falling
around you

I think sometimes that
You just don't want me
To know you at all
And I think sometimes that
I don't want to know you
either

I know you don't mean to
Half the time
And half the time you do
And that's why
I'm losing my eyes to tell
The differences in grey
That's why I'm losing my way

And I don't want to lose my
Sense of touch
'Cause I love it so much
And I wouldn't be ashamed to say
I like the way the human feels
Under my skin
I like the way the human feels
Under my skin

It will be hard at first
And it will be hard at last
No one's ever sure of their decisions
And I'm no sage
No on'es ever sure of their decisions
And I'm no sage

I think sometimes that
You just don't want me
To know you at all
And I think sometimes that
I don't want to know you
either
