"Kick out the Jams"

Kick out the jams
By: Lana Mini

The time is near for the motor Cit Music Conference Wednesday through Sunday, April 20-24.
Snoop Dog plays the Joe. Moby plays the State Theatre.
More than 450 bands. Dozens of Detroit venues. Record industry officials from coast to coast. And it’s cheaper than a stadium concert ticket.
For a $15 one-day pass you can see Paul Westerberg at 5P.M., Moby at 9P.M., and another band at 11P.M. each at a different location,”MCMF co-director Dana Ferrester said. “ Or for a $40 pass you can see Snoop, Moby and all the bands. It’s an amazing price.”
Every musical genre imaginable: folk, punk, jazz, world, rockabilly, glam, heavy, metal, gothic, Motown, hip-hop, rock, folk, electronic, pop, blues, garage…it’s all Detroit’s sound and can be heard at the citywide event.
Detroit’s been on the map since the blues in the 1940s and there’s always been so much happening here musically,” Forrrester said. “This event was going to happen eventually. It’s unprecedented. It’s demanded by the industry that we do this now.”
There’s a night of trashy rock‘n’roll at the 2500 Club and world beats can be heard at Agave. There’s hip hop at Envy, blues at Fishbone’s and rocker guitarist Joe Anthony is performing at the Hard Rock Café.
The Black Keys-an emerging rock band-plays St. Andrews hall. There’s an all ages punk show at Alvin’s. DJs will mix at Bleu. Jill Jack comes to the City Theatre and Rex Sepulveda plays the Fountain Ball room at the Masonic Temple.
The Javelins, The Vespas, Patrick Thomas, Don Prodigy, Dutch Henry, Jon Rice, Liz Larin, Calvin Cooke, Bugs Beddow Band, Maurice Malone’s Hip-Hop Shop, Darren McCarty’s Grinder, Hemigod, Benny Cruz, Crud, Dollfaces, Detroit Cobras, Second Hand Poets, the Fondas, 3D Invisibles, Paul Westerberg, sista Otis, Rich Korqch, Blackman Arnold, Tanya Reed, Native of The New Dawn, The Zines, Wiskey Tenor, Salt Miners, Motown Rage, Five Fifty, Morphic, Clevations, the Bety Fords, Fat Killahz.
Is your head spinning yet?
At Press time the schedule wasn’t even complete. But organizers say www.mcmf.com should list most of it before the event/
It’s impossible for attendees to catch all the bands, so if you’re just looking for the buzz bands, one of them is Animal Chinz performing at Fifth Avenue Downtown on Saturday April 23.
Animal Chinz is led by singer Zach Kadro, formerly of the rock band Gryphon Shepherd and reggae band Skunky Monkey.
“MCMF should be really cool with so much Detroit sound being represented,” Kadro said. “There isn’t just one sound here and thi9s is a great way for people to check out everything that’s happening here. Now is a great time to live in Detroit”
Erica Koltonow, who is co-director of MCMF with Forrester, said the idea to bring Detroit musicians, journalist, record label executives, the fans and club owners evolved just recently.
Since the nightclubs aren’t all centrally located, the People Mover is the hub for transportation. It will have extended hours.
“A journalist mentioned Detroit and the Super Bowl and all the music and that there should be a music conference here,” Koltonow said. “So we said why not? Let’s try to get everyone together and see what happens. We’re so excited; it’s going to be amazing.”
The women work together for Aural Pleasure, a music entertainment agency. They have confidence the event will be big.
“Ticket sales are strong’” Forrester said.
“Patrons from Detroit and overseas, including Japan, Australia and European countries, are coming in to check out the music scene. They really pay attention to what’ happening in Detroit.”
Those in the music industry can attend the panel discussions at Cobo Hall. Jeff Blue from A&R and Daniel Shulman of Island Def Jam will discuss recording deals. Greg Baise of the Majestic Theatre will talk about bands getting gigs at nightclubs. Brian J. Bowe of Creem Magazine will discuss the world of music critics. Jeremy Peters of Ghostly International will talk about indie labes.
There will also be information on licensing for music, film and television, marketing, radio entertainment law, the world of radio, the role of world music and a lot more.

Bio

Animal Chinz formed when five passionate musicians got together and built some nice tunes. Within three months they had a record ready to record and began playing shows in Detroit. Shows include the Lager House, the Magic Stick, Alvins, and 5th Avenue downtown.

The band is continuting to write and perform in and around Detroit. Look out for their debut record late this summer.

Think Bob Marley, Genesis, Nirvana, and the Velvet Underground with Arabic spices, aggressive guitar playing, hard hitting drumming, and lyrics like "Ideas get tests like the rest, the west is filled with fake chests, the east holds mystical secrets, they hide above the pyramids....Thrown from the ocean, caught in a swimming pool, put them back in the sea....Baby girl why you sad, dry your eyes it ain't so bad you know....why should we be enemies can't we be friends, why do we have to stand firing from opposite ends... have a nice tea take a break..."
