An Introduction

Doug Wintch & Anke Summerhill:

Anke Summerhill and songwriter Doug Wintch form a duo whose sound includes soulful vocals, harmonies, guitars, bass, harmonica & mandolin. Anke & Doug feature their award winning original songs, spanning the range from quirky love songs to rock nroll to ballads.

Doug's songs are filled with delightful wordplay and gentle self-deprecating humor that never fails to charm. You'll be humming his songs for days.

A native of Germany, Anke arrived in Utah via Canada decades ago and fell in love with, as her song says, "Canyons so Deep, you can See the Stars at Noon." I think you'll agree, she is now a Utah treasure.

Together, long-time friends, Doug Wintch & Anke Summerhill make their lively performances fun and refreshing, combining songs that touch the heart and tickle the funny bone.

Along with their duo tours, Anke Summerhill & Doug Wintch have recently toured with Duncan Phillips & the Utah Phillips Tribute Tour.

Wild Bird's Wing

Written By: Anke Summerhill

Wild Bird's Wing
words & music by Anke Summerhill c 2003, Sky & Earth Music,

I don't know how it happened
I don't know where to start
When I looked into your eyes
I only saw your heart
So wild and free and simple
Like the beating of a wild bird's wing
The lightening in the distance
The question in your smile
The spaces that are too wide
I cannot reconcile
They might have told me something
But I only heard the beating of a wild bird's wing
Come walk with me
There's nothing finer than the dew out in the fields
A path we're free to walk
A candle in the dark
A thread we cannot see
That binds your soul to me
So let's walk along the riverside
And walk across the sand
And touch the heat of summer rocks
As we hold out our hands
Listen for the thunder
And the sound of something beating like a wild bird's wing
Come walk with me
There's nothing finer than the dew out in the fields
A path we're free to walk
A candle in the dark
A thread we cannot see
That binds your soul to me, binds your soul to me
I don't know how it happened
I don't know where to start
When I looked into your eyes
I only saw your heart
So wild and free and simple, so wild and free and simple,
So wild and free and simple, like the beating of a wild bird's wing.

The Cat Song

Written By: Anke Summerhill

The Cat Song ~ (imagine the music to the song: If I Only Had A Brain)

It has long been of my wishes
That my cats would do the dishes
If they only had the will
But they don’t want to and they’ll never
‘Cause they know they’re much too clever
And they’ll get the tuna still

They could help us with the housework
But they’d rather do the mouse-work
Just to earn their keep
But when the mice they come-a-running
To taunt them with their funning
The cats are fast asleep

Oh to be a cat
To lie in the sun and nap
Then roll across the floor
Get up to eat
And sleep some more

In a dish of milk they’ll revel
But the vacuum is the devil
According to a cat
But they will clean the kitchen table
Just as long as they are able
And I don’t catch them in the act

In the night they tend to wander
Way off over yonder
And go a-yowling at the moon
But when we’ve listened to their chorus
The repetition it does bore us
And the morning comes too soon

Oh to be a cat
To lie in the sun and nap
Then roll across the floor
Get up to eat
And sleep some more

I guess we take it as a given
That to work one must be driven
But the cats don’t see the point
They have a house and home and garden
Though they often claim they’re starving
And they think they own the joint

They have a butler and a personal maid
Who bring them tuna and crab cakes
And they know they have it made.

Queen Spade

Written By: Anke Summerhill

QUEEN SPADE ~ words & music Anke Summerhill

Lay your burden down
But don't lay it at my door
It's not mine for the taking
Or yours for the giving

Chorus: Queen Spade in high heels
Does as she pleases
Cold as a steel grate
Dark and a long way down

You had wings to fly
Now they've withered to the bone
Don't you tell me what grace is
While trying to take what is not yours

Chorus:

Bridge:
Fantasy and make-believe
You claim you've been misunderstood
Turn your back to the light
One more step in the night
Take your black heart
And call it good

Eden knows your name
Doesn't want to close the door
But I won't leave it wide open
Anymore

Chorus: Queen Spade in high heels
Does as she pleases
Cold as a steel grate
Dark
Queen Spade in high heels
Does as she pleases
Cold as a steel grate
Dark and a long way down
