"Citizens and Discontent: Nickyland"

"My newest favorite queer, folk band Anna/Kate Band – I’d just recently discovered them at La Mama’s “Sound Departures” – reminded me again of the power of simple acts, both in their unalloyed arrangements and in the message they had us sing along with them." - CultureBot

"An Indoor Campfire"

"There were many bands that were completely unfamiliar to me. One of those, the Anna/Kate Band, is terrific. Normally an eight-piece band, they had only three on stage for their set; Anna, Kate, and guitarist Mark. They describe themselves as a queer folk-pop group. Anna and Kate were theatre majors (I am guessing specifically musical theatre) which was obvious to me from their expressive performance style. They have great harmonies and an infectious sound. For one song, Anna and Kate stood at opposite ends of the room and sang to each other without amplification. Fabulous!" - NO DEPRESSION: A Roots Journal

"Folk-Pop Duo Anna/Kate Get Dapper for EP Release"

PPhotographer Hiro Yukiseo recently partnered with stylist Rachel Pincus to shoot an exclusive dapperQ fashion editorial featuring Anna/Kate, a queer folk-pop band based out of New York City. The resulting images captured the organic synergy between dapper style and folk music, a relationship they felt was important to highlight with respect to their latest EP, The SubRosa Sessions, a 9-song EP recorded live-in-concert at SubCat Recording Studios in Syracuse, NY. Anna/Kate sat down with us to expand upon why and share and exclusive release of their EP with our readers - DapperQ

"Anna/Kate and that summer day in Coney Island we wish we had"

We stumbled upon this video by NYC folk duo Anna/Kate and we just couldn't help but stare and listen. A beautiful song matched by a simple video that celebrates love and the infinite evocative power of a summer day spent in Coney Island. - DELI Magazine

"PREMIER: Anna/Kate release music video for new single "Head On Vacation""

Anna/Kate are a queer folk-pop band who were introduced by a friend in a coffee shop three years ago. They have been making music together for over 1.5 years and have since grown into a popular duo that has performed at festivals, theaters, and a variety of established music venues. The band is helmed by Anna Gothard and Kate Foster, and joined by multi-instrumentalists Jayne Quan, Jess Sennett, Mark Oaks and frequent collaborator AbaKis. - POSTURE Magazine

"Scene & Heard: Folkstar Headlines At Friends And Lovers' Homoground, Joined By Anna/Kate"

Outside of Friends and Lovers in Brooklyn, NY, a recent trip out west was still fresh on the minds of Anna Gothard and Kate Foster, members of the queer folk group Anna/Kate.

As Anna played her ukulele, leaning up against a graffiti-laden wall, Kate, dressed in high-waisted black shorts and a purple “Reproductive Justice” tee, discussed the backwards nature of Arizona anti-gay laws and the cruelty against trans women in some Southern states.

“A lot of us feel like we have to hide,” Anna said. “When we formed Anna/Kate, we believed we had to be honest and transparent with our lyrics and presentation of the queer community and our lives.” - NEXT Magazine

"Scene & Heard: HOT! Celebration Of Queer Culture Previews Five Of This Summer's Performers"

The night ended with a mellow performance by queer, folk-pop band Anna/Kate. For Hot!, the two will be performing a show entitled “Fear City/Fun City.” The show will feature music from the band as well as theatrical, performance pieces. The stories will reflect New York, New Orleans, and love. - NEXT Magazine

"You Should Go: Staceyann Chin and Anna/Kate Performing In NYC"

Your night won't peak there. Nope. Straight after, Anna/Kate will perform a song cycle titled I RUN WITH YOU; which explores the perception of dreams, queer and eco- movements, and finding love in the most broken of places. - AutoStraddle

"Queer Folk-Pop and Activism in NYC: Catching up with 2009 Alumni Anna Gothard and Kate Foster"

Anna Gothard and Kate Foster have joined forces to make music and beautiful theatre together in NYC. Their new work “i run with you” will be featured in the Women Center Stage Festival this summer. They took the time to talk to us about their current projects and reminisce about their time at the ADA....

Can you tell us about your new piece “I Run With You”?
We explore that moment when you choose to run with your (for us it’s queer) community, run with love, run with relationships and run with humanity instead of staying curled up in a ball forever, after a really shitty day. It is jam packed with our original music, spoken word, storytelling and silliness.

Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process together?
We met two years ago and on our first date we found out that we both attended ADA, in the same year, but different semesters. That was an instant connection for us. We just started collaborating in December of 2012 and then in February, created our Queer Folk-Pop Duo. The show we are developing is the first installment to a larger project that will ultimately be an interactive musical theatrical experience with our original music. We work really well together and balance each other out when the other is stressed and/or overwhelmed. We write and write and edit and edit and rewrite. The structure is constantly changing but the theme has always stayed the same. We don’t live together but in order to get work done we usually camp out at each other’s places. And in NYC language that means starting at 8pm and probably going into the wee hours only to wake up for your 9-5'er. Hamster wheel of fun. . . After this show, we have a slot lined up for Dixon Place, which is a dream theatre for both of us.

When and where will it be performed?
It will be performed at Culture Project in the 2013 Women Center Stage Festival.

Tell us more about the Women Center Stage Festival?
Wonderful festival that allows women to create, produce and direct original and in-development work. There are not enough spaces for women to create new, original and never before seen work. Come on people we are living in the 21st century! - ada life

Bio

ANNA/KATE BAND (www.annakateband.com) are a 6-piece queer folk pop band, based in New York. Initially established as a duo, "two queers and a ukulele," Anna/Kate Band has grown to encompass a driving folk rock sound. Cellist Temi Hason provides haunting new melodies, alongside the trifecta of guitar, bass, banjo and drums from cousins Mark Oaks, Kelly House, and "the only good thing to come from Reddit" Bryan Clark. Their songs explore the intersections between folk, jazz, and Americana, bolstered by Anna and Kate's signature intricate harmonies.

In the two-year stint of creating musical immersion together, the band has gone from putting up folk-pop musicals at NYC theaters Dixon Place and Culture Project to ever larger acts of musical mischief. They've been responsible for Coney-Island love-fests featured on popular NYC websites and magazines. They've scored films and web-series. They've been interviewed by podcasts, played on the radio, crafted love-songs for weddings, played countless NYC music venues, and taken over sofa stores and abandoned warehouses after-hours for unforgettable sold-out concert events.

The band has had feature stories with DAPPERQ, Autostraddle, POSTURE Magazine and DELI Magazine. Their music videos and shows have been featured on NEXT Magazine, They Make Noise 'Zine, No Depression, and other music blogs. Their music has been featured on Robin Hood Radio (MA), This is Not the Radio podcast (NY), and Homoground Radio (NY).

Anna/Kate Band has toured throughout the Northeast (Pennsylvania's Musikfest 2015 & 2016, Club Passim's campfire.festival, Six Depot, Sub Rosa Series/Sub Cat Studios). They can be found regularly playing in New York City, from Pete's Candy Store to Rockwood Music Hall, PIANO's to the American Folk Art Museum, Pine Box Rock Shop to the Bitter End. The band recently came home from a European tour, featured as festival artists at CrisisArts Festival (Arezzo, Italy) and Christopher Street Day Parade (Berlin, Germany).
