Anna-Anna is a one-woman experimental electronic/ sci-fi pop band based in Rio de Janeiro. The music consists of synth sounds and textures, sparse beats and lyric narratives that involve superpowers, time travel, and dream-like imagination with vocals that recall 60's and 70's French pop singers.

Biography

"This bafflingly brilliant Brazilian's 'sci-fi torch songs' sound like jungle music from a galaxy far, far away"
-Paul Lester, The Guardian

"It’s absolutely stunning...This is a music that is completely its own... “Last Night, I Lit the Moon” is a subtle, but ambitiously bold marrying of human possibility and the concept album. Anna-Anna is everything and nothing in these songs."
- Their Bated Breath blog

Anna-Anna is one-woman experimental electronic/ sci-fi pop band based in Rio de Janeiro. Informed by soundtracks, forlorn ballads and french chanson/pop, Anna-Anna is an homage to the fictional every-woman from films. Manuela Leal is the singer, song-writer, producer and art-director for this project. Anna-Anna started in early 2011, releasing her first EP "Last Night I lit the Moon" digitally on July 01, 2011. Anna-Anna was described as "bafflingly brilliant" on Paul Lester's column "New Band of the Day" on The Guardian website. Anna-Anna's music was featured on Tom Robinson's Introducing show on BBC6, and on NPR's Alt Latino blog, among others.

Manuela Leal describes Anna-Anna as "an alter-ego that lives in fictional world where everything is possible. 'Anna-Anna' is a name that sounds common and neutral in any language. Anna-Anna, the double. Anna-Anna, the superhero that turns ice into gold. 'Anna' is also the first name of Anna Magnani, the Italian actress. Anna-Anna is "the idea that we can re-organize reality according to our dreams, not the other way around…music (that) provides alternate models of existence that can be inhabited by anyone" .

The music consists of synth sounds and textures, sparse beats and lyrical narratives that involve basically superpowers, time travel, and affecting the built and natural environments through imagination. The vocals hover in-and-out over the music, somewhere between whisper and spoken words. Anna-Anna writes electronic, melancholic torch-songs of longing with vocals that recall French and Italian singers from the 60's and 70's like Françoise Hardy and Ornella Vanoni.

Anna-Anna's EP "Last Night I lit the moon" was written, arranged and recorded at her home in Rio de Janeiro. It features four tracks that explore the themes of cat-like laser vision and metaphysical superpowers ("Cat-Eyes"), mental travels to the moon whilst longing for a long-lost lover ("Last night I lit the moon" , the unraveling of one's american dream ("Mirrors of America"), and the inhabiting of the myth of Icarus of flying too close to the sun ("Tiny Feathers").

Manuela Leal was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, and moved to the US as a teenager, settling in New Haven, CT and eventually to New York where she became a visual artist. Several years later she moved back to Rio to focus on music.

Anna-Anna played her first live shows at The Great Escape Festival, and Liverpool Sound City festivals in the UK.

Last night I lit the moon

Written By: Anna-Anna

LAST NIGHT I LIT THE MOON
Last night I lit the moon
with silver thoughts to follow you
I stepped over broken bones, saw the ghosts of bombs
Climbed and climbed
I fly with time
Lunar surface is a field of dust
Electric dust of space and sun
Saw the earth from above
Kept my ear to the ground
Heard the moon tremble,
Put gravity aside

Last night I lit the moon
with silver thoughts to follow you

The sun reaches out to the moon
And milks its silver mold
then sure I would see you
from high above
The moon, silvery angel
Reflects the light of the mightier sun
Your body, moon crater
Mirror of love

Last night I lit the moon
with silver thoughts to follow you

And if a thread of silver touches you
Thoughts, lit into flames
cold flames shivering, shivering silver light
if one day they’ll reach you, well they might
it’s too late for memories
I’ve burned them up for the light
of silver thoughts
to follow you

Cat-Eyes

CAT EYES

I’ve got cat eyes baby
I turn ice into gold
I’ve got cat eyes baby
My laser vision will melt your love

If love is anything it is a wish
To make human what is cold
To turn tears into warm blankets
To turn ice, into gold

I’ve got cat eyes baby
I turn ice into gold
I’ve got cat eyes baby
My laser vision will melt your love

If the powers of Greyskul were to grant me
my wish of love
I would have my cat-eyes made
out of diamond-cutter knives

I’ve got cat eyes baby
I turn ice into gold
I’ve got cat eyes baby
My laser vision will melt your love

For years I had myopic vision
dreaming of the day we’d reunite
Time had turned you into ice-cold stone
At least that’s what I’d found
If a thick layer of hurt
were to harden you away from love
I’ve got brand-new cat vision
To break walls and make your heart grow

I’ve got cat eyes baby
I turn ice into gold
I’ve got cat eyes baby
My laser vision will melt your love

Mirrors of America

Written By: Anna-Anna

Mirrors of America
Palaces of golden plaster

Leaving the city of straight lines
Breathing the dust of a golden age
Buildings circumvent our movements
Bodies move along lines of shifting shadows
The city, cast in stone and concrete,
Moves in predictable drones

Mirrors of America
Palaces of golden plaster

What can be seen is already past
What is “today” doesn’t match
The speed and feeling of thoughts
How I’m longing for another life
We look for cities to mirror what we are

Mirrors of America
Palaces of golden plaster

If cities were made from images
Of thoughts that hover
There would be street palaces
Made from golden plaster
Our wet daydreams
of great lasting happiness
that will harden fast then break to pieces
