"Anna Matthewson Starry Eyed Believer Review"

Hailing all the way from the other side of the world (literally!), Anna Matthewson from New South Wales, Australia, is slowly but surely breaking her way into the biz. With her album, Starry Eyed Believer being recently released on iTunes, the unsigned artist clearly has talent, and her smooth sound is definitely worth a listen. So needless to say, with the little information I have about her, I am going to try my best to write a good and accurate review. Ms. Matthewson describes herself as a mixture of funk, soul, and jazz. Although very true, I would also say that there are definitely some adult-contemporary pop tracks on the album.
Matthewsons voice reminds me of a nightclub singer. Her impressive, well-trained vocals really complement the piano and bluesy guitar featured on her tracks. Some favourites of mine off Believer include Baby, the title track and When the Skies are Grey. Baby has a smooth melody with a hint of soul and some good blues-guitar solos. Starry Eyed Believer is a beat more upbeat, contemporary jazzy tune, making it a funky light track. If youre into more adult pop, When the Skies are Grey bears a little resemblance, at least to me, to a Lee Ann Womback ballad, particularly Last Call, not in terms of voice, but instrumentals.
Essentially, this is a solid funk/soul/jazz/pop album from an artist down under. Matthewsons voice is very well-trained and, at times, captivating. Her music is mainly for those who like light jazz/funk with some soul and blues thrown into the mix. Overall, I would give Starry Eyed Believer an A and would recommend it to all.

"Anna Matthewson at the Basement"

It seems with the growing popularity of artists such as Norah Jones, John Mayer and Ben Harper to name just a few, that the performance of live music as an entertainment medium and music in general is taking a turn for the real.

People from all ages and backgrounds are seeking real singers, singing real songs while playing real instruments for their first choice of entertainment. The elaborate backing tapes often heard belting out of pubs and clubs are a thing of the past. Musicians these days are happy to work their gig with a straight acoustic guitar or piano. They belt it out with now with their fully exposed skills on their instruments as they play both new and old songs to their appreciative audience.

Anna Matthewson is one of those performers.

As a singer/song writer, working solo on her piano (with obvious Norah Jones comparisons) or as the front singer of a funk/jazz band, Anna can capture her audience with the beauty of her all new original melodies and lyrics not to mention the exquisite soul of her stunning voice.

Her performance starts at 9.30pm and she will be selling and signing copies of her debut CD Not Made For Average at the venue

Bio

Anna is a mesmerizing performer. Every sound and line is dedicated to communicating with the discerning listener, enticing him or her with delicate melodies, addictive grooves and thought provoking lyrics. She mixes a combination of Funk and Soul, a sound which captures people to listen the moment they hear it and demands an approving response.

After witnessing Anna singing into a broom at the age of 4, Anna’s mother enrolled her in piano lessons, giving her the foundations for her musical journey. By her teens Anna had gained a flare for improvisation and songwriting, her piano teacher, noticing her flourishing voice, encouraged her to take up singing lessons.

Early in 2001, Anna commenced a Bachelor of Contemporary music degree at the Southern Cross University, Lismore, majoring in vocal performance.
Graduating with a Distinction average for her studies in 2003, Anna then left for the Middle East where she spent a 3 months performing in a local venue in Muscat in Oman.

After a brief trip back to Oz, she then took up a residency on board the Brittany Ferries Pont Aven, cruising around the English Channel as the pianist and lead singer in a 4-piece band.

Returning to Australia in late 2004, Anna started her own 5-piece band and set to work on her debut album “Not Made For Average”.
The 10-track album was released in May 2006, launched at The Basement in Sydney in July, and featured the week commencing 24 July on Sydney radio 2NSB FM99.3 as their “Wish Disc” of the week.

Barry Bissell has interviewed Anna for his National Weekly Countdown; Sarah McDonald has interviewed her for ABC Radio, and the album has been featured as disc of the week on Camberra Arts Radio.

After some time off from gigging scene to write and record, Anna has come up with a breakthrough new album titled “Starry Eyed Believer”. The album takes it's influences from singers such as Corrine Bailey Rae and Katie Noonan and features the likes of Mitch Farmer (drums for Keith Urban, Troy Cassar-Daley, Marcia Hines), Mark Costa (resident bassist on Australian Idol), and Ben Gurton (trombone for Herbie Hancock, Guy Sebastian).

Anna has set her course and is striding onto the Australian music scene with great strength. Do not expect her to make a quiet entry!
