True Love Don't Weep, duo album with James Hill (2009)

Cellist/singer Anne Janelle moves so gracefully between classical and contemporary styles, you'd think it was easy. Throughout her years of training as a classical cellist Anne maintained a love of popular, jazz and folk styles. Anne's concert history - which includes performances with orchestras, ensembles, and soloists such as Kanye West, Bruce Cockburn, Holly Cole - is testament to that. Anne has also flourished in contemporary music, taking a liking to free improv in music and movement. Lately, she has been spending much of her time in folk music circles. Since 2006 she has performed widely with ukulelist/songwriter James Hill; their acclaimed collaboration True Love Don't Weep won Traditional Album of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

The Folk Diary calls Anne "absolutely brilliant on the cello," but it's her songwriting that takes centre stage on Beauty Remains, her debut solo album. "I've fallen in love with melody, harmony, poetry along the way, " says Anne, "and with songwriting I get to work with them all! It's a wonderfully compelling challenge that just smells good." Her songs, teeming with complexity and candour, are a special blend of influences that range from Mozart to Feist to Nick Drake to John Zorn. Whether stripped-bare or richly orchestrated, her musical mélange swirls with emotion, honesty and sparkle. In every song, the listener is privy to Anne's secret life as expressed through compelling imagery, diverse orchestration and her captivatingly sweet voice.

After years of submersion in the worlds of classical music, folk music, and contemporary dance, an empowered and inspired Anne Janelle is once again at the helm of a new, beautiful artistic adventure.
