"Tonight In Music: Annie Lockwood, Last American Badass & More"

The Fourth of July is always sparse for shows, but luckily the Blue Moon has an interesting one! Did we mention it’s also free? Annie Lockwood is by no means a guitar virtuoso. Her gentle strums are incredibly simple , even rudimentary. What makes Lockwood a show to see tonight is her slow, soulful voice and involved lyrics. “Much Less of A Lady” is one of my favorite songs available on her MySpace page. It’s essentially about how if the narrator was a bit sluttier, she would be totally sexy-timing it up with the guy she’s with. “She’s a Gun” is also an interesting song. Told from the point of view of a gun, one that despised it’s purpose. Lockwood does have a habit of addressing the subjects of her song as “Mr. (Fill in the Blank).” This includes, “Mr. Preacherman,” from “The Westboro Baptist Fight Song,” “Mr. Answer-man,” and “Mr. Song” from “Much Less of a Lady” and “Clouds In My Hair,” respectively. Despite this minor annoyance, Lockwood’s songs are mostly about female empowerment, and her slow, careful words truly make you listen. - Seattle Show Gal

"You’re A Jukebox Heroine – Annie Lockwood"

You’re A Jukebox Heroine – Annie Lockwood
February 1, 2010
My second featured artist in JH’s new segment “You’re A Jukebox Heroine” is Annie Lockwood from Kenmore, WA.

An acoustic singer-songwriter, Annie’s tunes mix the perfect amount of folk sensibility with throaty longing and conviction. Her vocal style reminds me of Carrie Newcomer mixed with Norah Jones. She uses repetition with her more important lyrics and I really like that. It highlights the emotion of the songs, much like blues lyrical repetition does. It’s just her and her acoustic guitar, but do not let that fool you. Her songs emote complex feelings and ranges that make any singer-songwriter express their soul. My favorite song is ”Maybe 15” which describes the memories of friendship and youth. In reminds me of my own “90s movie soundtracks” “before we woke up all grownup” as the song states. It captures that sense of what was when you were young and sometimes stupid, yet happy in it, before things had to get serious. “The Muzzle Waltz” is a powerful song about female voice backed by light guitar picking. It talks about a girl (What’sHerName) who had her bonds of feminine silence taken away so that now, she can speak, and say what she has wanted to say. The end of the song is left open though. Does she get to speak? Or as the song fades away, it mentions that she has a pretty face. In a way, this is the plight of finding your own voice for many women. You want to speak, but all they want to focus on is your looks.

Overall, Annie Lockwood’s music is full of self-actualization and the complex emotions associated with life. It is truthful, raw, yet full of sparkle. Annie sings with sweet protest and plays with passion.

Bio

ARTIST BIO:
With something to say, Annie Lockwood has emerged as a strong performing singer/songwriter and guitarist, native to Seattle. Annie's music is original (seriously original), refreshing, very honest, edgy and her vocals are rich, raw and sincere. Annie's simple guitar rhythms yield to her more important lyrics in her powerful situational protest songwriting style with a Roots / Americana / Protest vibe.

Anyone that knows Annie, knows that her lyrical style is exactly the same as a conversation with her, a quest to universalize with her words. Her songs deliver part pointed-finger (sans blame game) & the rest - honesty.

Annie describes her own music as: "mellow tunes.....with a smidge of sweet protest"
