DOWN through the bustling CBD with the promise of an interview and a coffee.
An interview at the Belgian Beer Café brings promise of beer or at the very least a tasty bite to eat – but to bitter disappointment the café is closed and Graham and I find ourselves on an inner-city expedition in search of a quiet spot of coffee.
2007 has proven to be a monumental year for Brisbane outfit Another Day Down, having supported My Chemical Romance, Anberlin, and most recently New Found Glory.
A major feat, especially considering the group have a mere two EPs to their name.
The band’s first recording, An Epilogue To Start The Story, smacks of pop-punk. However the boys clearly raised the bar with their sophomore effort, In Pursuit Of The Crime. In less than a year, their sound had changed significantly, darker heavier and lyrically more mature.
Since forming in 2002 Another Day Down, have reinvented their line-up several times.
“We recorded In Pursuit Of The Crime around March last year, back then Eric used to play the guitar,” says Graham.
Their current arrangement sees Graham on guitar, younger brother Matt Graham on drums, bassist Andrew Davidson, recent recruit Andy Munnings taking over on guitar, former guitarist Eric Swavley now fronting the group.
“It took a while for Eric to get into it,” mentions Graham, “Touring with My Chemical Romance has really brought him out as a frontman and I’m really proud of him, he’s stepped up heaps.”
Sharing the playbill with internationally successful acts has undoubtedly generated attention, but the extra focus has also placed them in the firing line, and Another Day Down has endured more than their fair share of criticism.
Graham responds thoughtfully, “I’ve never written a band off because of their name, I don’t even like to write bands off because of their music because everybody progresses - if people had written us off three years ago when we were fucking awful, fair enough, I’m sure lots of people did, but I’m not too concerned about it.”
When asked how Another Day Down manages to stand apart from other bands, Graham’s previously confident demeanor shifts, “How do we differ? (pause) Okay this is how we think (pause) Ahh! I hate talking us up! I get in trouble for not talking us up enough, I hate bands that talk themselves up (laughs), but I think we always try to be as authentic to ourselves as we can”
Is remaining authentic a difficult adjustment after having tasted the big shows? “The thing I like most about it – the people that go to see the My Chemical Romance shows are there to see My Chemical Romance and if we are good enough that they like us then that’s great we get some new people (fans). But when we’re playing shows in Brisbane people are actually there to see us, people know the words to songs – there’s nothing like a home town all-age show I love it! It’s always something special walking into a sold-out Tivoli, and the first of two Brisbane club shows for celebrated emo flag-bearers My Chemical Romance since their lauded BDO set at the weekend promises an atmosphere worth waiting for.
Local boys Another Day Down kick off the evening with their signature blend of post-hardcore influenced alternative rock as the crowd file into the centre floor and press against the railings on the upper level for the guitar melody-driven set which includes most tracks from the EP In Pursuit Of the Crime, some new tunes and even a live debut. An excellent choice for the MCR’s national support act, the set even withstands a small song-list misunderstanding regarding the boys’ finale.
It seemed an eternity between when the enormous The Black Parade banner is raised and the first strums from an acoustic guitar on The End ring out across the theatre. Playing the first half of their latest rock opera-inspired record The Black Parade, track-for-track, My Chemical Romance break into a selection of back catalogue favourites before returning to a more anthemic set, including Mama, Sleep and Teenagers. Although unwavering in their sonic perfection, even frontman Gerard Way’s best efforts to ‘get his punk on’ seems to leave room for improvement, though, in fairness, the hoards of black-clad fans look more than satisfied.

i have so much respect, admiration and appreciation for you all! I continue to remain in awe how you can rock out with crazy fight circles one night and still play so amazingly the following night to a smaller crowd.

Last night.. wow you guys were just amazing. Actually.. beyond amazing. I don't even think there is a word in any language that would cater for how great you guys are.
Eric, I know I said this last night, but I'm going to say it again. Thank you so much for getting everyone to move back! It was great to get my legs back and I'm pretty sure everyone else who was in pain are thanking you also. You're a champ. I hope you're throat gets better sooner rather than later.
I must say though, last night was definately worth the bruising.
I dug out my disc men last night to listen to the cd you gave out (as promised) last night. Love the song. I'm so excited for the EP! It'll be uploaded to itunes just after I finish this lengthy comment.
I'm sure that many others agree that you guys mean the world. Honestly, I don't think you can find a nicer bunch of guys. If you guys didn't come to my school 2 years ago, I don't know where I would be today. You guys mean so much.

Brisbane based rocker’s Another Day Down, release their highly anticipated new single ‘Mountain’ to radio on October 1st , which is taken from the band’s forthcoming EP release ‘I Watch A World’.
Produced by ARIA Award winning producer Anton Hagop (Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Powder Finger) and mastered by Tom Coyne at Sterling Sound NYC (P!nk, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance & The Used), ‘Mountain’ is “catchy pop rock tune, with a great edge.
“The song is about being yourself and not letting other people dictate what you do in life,” says Davo. “It is a good progression to where we want to be heading musically,” adds Phil who notes the latest [February 2007] arena shows with My Chemical Romance as the highlight of his musical career thus far.
The band have been shacked up in the studio to record their highly anticipated third EP which will be released in October, that features the new single ‘Mountain’ plus five brand new tracks which guitarist, Phil describes as “a sharper package, its short, sweet, simple and straight to the point”.
For a small band from Brisbane’s suburbs they have definitely come a long way, recently sharing the stage with high profile acts such as My Chemical Romance (USA) New Found Glory (USA) & Anberlin (USA). Another Day Down is definitely a band to keep on your radar in 2007.

2007 has already been a big year for Brisbane five-piece Another Day Down supporting US emo rockers, My Chemical Romance, throughout January and most recently Florida rock outfit New Found Glory in April, but things are only just beginning.
With two EP’s under their belt, the band will head in to the recording studio in July to record their third EP with producer Anton Hagop, the same producer that sat in the production seat for bands such as Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Powderfinger, The Dissociatives, COG and Natalie Imbruglia.
Another Day Down boast a sound that is a hybrid of bands like Senses Fail and early Taking Back Sunday, not to mention a line up that includes three vocalists – a recipe for success.
You can be sure that Eric Swavley (guitar/vocals), Phil Graham (guitar/vocals), Andrew Munnings (Guitar), Andrew Davidson (bass/vocals) and Matt Graham (drums), are genuine about their music. “We really plug our hearts into the music and we want to touch people’s lives when we’re onstage and through our albums,” explains guitarist and vocalist Phil.
In 2005, the band released their debut effort with ‘An Epilogue to Start the Story’, which successfully introduced the band to their home crowd of Brisbane, whilst building a steadily growing fan base. In July 2006, the band made waves with their follow up EP in the form of ‘In Pursuit Of The Crime’ with two singles successfully hitting the play lists of hundreds of radio stations around the country. Bass player, Andrew described the new recordings as “definitely more rock and a lot more energetic and maturity.”
Whilst their My Chemical Romance support tour was their biggest accolade to date, supporting big bands is something the band are all too familiar with having previously shared the stage with acts including Anberlin (USA), Antiskeptic (VIC), The Audition (USA), Emery (USA) and Motion City Soundtrack (USA). “We keep it really alive and we never do the same thing from one concert to the next… The vibe is always different,” says Phil.
Fans can expect “a whole lot of fun and energy with a kick ass stage show”, Eric says of a typical Another Day Down show. “Loads of energy, fun, head nodding, foot tapping and guitar slamming,” adds Phil.
Central to the heart of Another Day Down is the friendship and brotherhood structure of the band. “It’s vital that we stay tight and keep having fun. If we lose that we’ve lost something essential to the spirit of the band,” says Phil.
