Salisbury Post

When Ansel Brown hits the big time, we can say we knew him when.

Brown, who lives with his family in Charlotte, will be the featured performer at next weekend's Relay for Life.

Brown will perform from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Relay, which takes place at the Rowan County Fairgrounds.

A country singer, Brown fits with this year's country theme.

Tisha Goodwin, Relay chair, also thinks Brown will be the perfect fit for the event.

Charity work is a big part of Brown's life.

"We wanted a bigger band this year than what we've had before," Goodwin said recently.

Unfortunately, bigger bands mean big money.

Goodwin contacted WSOC 103.7 FM in Charlotte, and D.J. Stout recommended Brown.

"They are certain he's gonna be big," Goodwin said. "I just think he's gonna be a perfect fit. He's very concerned about giving back, which will make him a hit."

Brown's self-titled first album is due out next month.

Brown predicts the first hit single will be "Mine's Bigger."

"It's about love and all that stuff," Brown said in a phone interview Tuesday.

Other Ansel Brown songs to listen out for are "Didn't We Shine," "Waikiki Cowboy" and "Some People Change."

Born in South Carolina, Brown grew up in a Navy family and lived for a time in Hawaii. He's lived in Charlotte for the past 14 years. He and his wife have three young boys.

His "day job" for the time being is running an advertising and marketing agency.

"That's one of my passions," he said.

Another passion is working with sick children.

While working with Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte on a professional basis, he asked if he could come and sing to the children as a volunteer.

Brown thought it would be a sad experience.

"I had no idea how overwhelmingly inspirational it would be to me," he said. "It changed my life. They're the most inspiring people on the planet to me.

"I don't want to be known as just a charity guy. That's just one of those things I couldn't help but do."

Brown participates in Special Olympics, and will be the featured artist at an event benefitting Levine Children's Hospital May 15 at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont.

He also performs once a month in Nashville and has been invited to perform at that city's legendary Bluebird Café.

"I'm not interested in doing the bar scene," Brown said.

At this point in his career, Brown said, it's all about being persistent. "Eventually, people will start joining on the bandwagon."

Brown said he was looking forward to appearing at Relay.

"It's close by and I'm excited," he said. "I think I'm gonna be in a lawnmower race, too."

One way Brown is getting his music heard is through his site on MySpace, www.myspace.com/Ansel Brown. He also has a Web site, anselbrown.com.

The new CD will be available in late May or early June through the Web sites.

"Ansel Brown kicks off a preview of his Bigger Heart Tour with appearances at five children's hospitals in North and South Carolina"

Charlotte, NC -- IPAK recording artist Ansel Brown kicks off a preview of his Bigger Heart Tour with appearances at five children's hospitals in North and South Carolina, January 14-18. At each stop, the Carolina native will perform an acoustic set and will visit the hospital rooms of children too ill to attend the show. Dates and locations are:

January 14 at 2 p.m. Levine Children's Hospital/Charlotte, NC
January 15 at 2 p.m. McLeod Children's Hospital/Florence, SC
January 16 at 2 p.m. Palmetto Health Children's Hospital/Columbia, SC
January 17 at 2:30 p.m. Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital/Charleston, SC
January 18 at 2 p.m. Greenville Hospital Systems Children's Hospital/Greenville, SC

Ansel will also visit radio stations in each city, discussing the importance of these hospitals and the specialized care that they provide their very special patients, and sharing the story behind the Bigger Heart Tour. "The idea for all this began two years ago," Brown says. Acting on a friend's suggestion, Ansel donned his big Stetson and strolled into a room at Levine's Children's Hospital to kick off his signature song, "Waikiki Cowboy." The professionals marveled at the extraordinary connection Brown formed with the kids, and they encouraged the singer to broaden his efforts and repeat his success on a national level. Now, that vision is a reality, and these Carolina dates are just the start of the Bigger Heart Tour. Brown plans to take his one-man, one-of-a-kind show on the road and bring his music and larger-than-life personality to hospitals across the nation. "It's all about connecting through the music," Ansel says. "It's about reaching out and touching one heart, one hospital at a time."
Brown has already touched one very special heart - that of his new friend, Haley Cook. Haley has repeatedly beat the odds to become an inspiration to everyone around her. Her health permitting, Cook intends to act as an "ambassador" for a few of the Bigger Heart Tour stops. "Haley missed my first performance in the hospital because she was having her 29th brain surgery," Brown says. "She was a cocaine baby born prematurely. She's 10 years old and she's had over 300 major procedures in her life. She wasn't supposed to live past a week, and then she wasn't supposed to live past a year. She was never supposed to talk or walk, and she does all of those things. Haley is a living, breathing miracle, and she changes the life of everyone she meets. I want the world to know about her, and all the other children like her who face unbelievable challenges every day."

"Ansel Brown Signs with IPAK Records and EX-NFL Star Sean Gilbert to Head Label"

IPAK Records To Make Impact - Launches Label With Country Artist Ansel Brown Former NFL Pro Bowler Sean Gilbert Heads Up Label

Charlotte, NC (September 12, 2007) --- "IPAK plans to make an impact in the music business in all genres,” says IPAK Records’ President, Sean Gilbert. “We are launching the label with the signing of an artist who I believe is an ‘All American’ country star - Ansel Brown.”

Gilbert, a former NFL Pro Bowler and legendary defensive lineman (Panthers, Redskins, Rams, Raiders), has become a successful entrepreneur since leaving the NFL. He and Ansel crossed paths on an advertising project and a friendship began as soon as they realized they both shared a deep passion for music. "Over the past three years, I have watched how devoted Ansel is to his musical career,” says Gilbert. “It reminded me of my commitment and work ethic when I played in the NFL.”

Ansel’s first single will be released on September 17, and he’s been preparing for this debut for several months. Since creating his MYSPACE page just over a year ago, Brown has made amazing inroads, including the creation of “street teams” in nearly 30 states, and surpassing a milestone of over 730,000 plays.

Gilbert will begin signing additional artists (gospel, pop & R&B) to the imprint before the end of year. The label, currently operating out of Charlotte, plans to open offices in Nashville in the next 90 days.

"Didn't We Shine - This one's a keeper"

MySpace.com has created a new avenue towards success for aspiring superstars in all genres and Ansel Brown isn't waiting for anyone else to pave the way for him; he is fearlessly cutting his own wide corridor through the, sometime menacing, music jungle. Although the country music forum is laying claim to him, his charismatic personality and eclectic musical style are certain to guarantee him success in any, or every, genre.

His newly released single, "Didn't We Shine," illustrates this perfectly. This song is classic country in lyric and cadence but it has the drama that is most often associated with pop hits and memorable movie scores; this fact is certain to generate broad appeal for the song and the singer. The affecting lyrics are not only eloquent but eloquently delivered.

Like a majority of singers and songwriters, Brown is a dreamer who has set lofty goals for himself. He hopes to impact the world in a positive way the best way he knows how; through his music. If his generous heart (based on his ongoing charitable contributions) is an indication of who he is and "Didn't We Shine" is the gauge of his music caliber than perhaps impacting the world with his music isn't so lofty of a goal after all. This one's a keeper. - Cheryl Harvey Hill, Senior Staff Journalist CountryStarsOnline.com

Bio

Ansel Brown Bio
by Jim Asker

With most artists, the listener is asked to engage in that particular artist’s work, and the listener’s experience is that particular effort of the artist. Many times it ends up being personal and yes, even self serving—and that may not be a bad thing—it just is what it is!

With Ansel Brown, the difference is that he’s on a musical expedition- through his experiences and the music allows the listener to take that journey with him. So you may not have been able to get to Cape Canaveral for the final Space Shuttle Landing, but listen to Ansel’s moving anthem, “When You Fly,” and it will take you there. Ansel says it simply, “I create experiences with my music.”

Ansel got the Country bug as people like Garth Brooks (one of his favorites), and others were literally exploding on the scene. It was the Country boom period and Ansel knew that he was going to be a part of that. However, there were also bills to pay and life to take care of. Talking to Ansel, you realize quickly and clearly—it’s all about music and experiences. He’s on a journey and lucky for us, there’s room in the rocket for everyone.

Great artists normally take detours and side roads before they end up on their path of destiny. For Ansel it was no different. He started a record label, went to Nashville to be a star, and after recognizing it for what much of it is—there was a hiatus, and he re-grouped.

“I visit hospitals all the time,” said Ansel. “I want to meet kids, play them some music, and even if it’s just for a little while, take their mind off their sickness. Well, some people don’t think that’s a good use of time when according to them, I should be making money.”

Ansel clearly goes against the grain and will gladly tell you just that. This time it would be about experiences, and if radio success happens and songs become hits, as they very well may, it won’t be because this artist became part of some star-making machine. “I am handling my music and career, as I should have been doing all along,” said Ansel. “I’d love for millions of people to hear my music—for radio programmers to love the songs—but this time I’ll be doing it my way.”

Ansel is involved with so many experiences! It’s best to see the depth of the experiences on his website, where you’ll see (if you don’t know already), that this guy goes from NASA to women’s aviation to dirt racing, and in every case there’s great music! For example, “A World of Outlaws,” is the theme song for the largest Dirt Racing series in the U.S. and he was featured on Outcast Kustoms, an original series on the Discovery VELOCITY Channel. The song, “When You Fly,” co-written by his wife Lisa, salutes aviation, and was also used as a tribute for the final space shuttle launch, landing and farewell ceremony.

Ansel Brown’s mission is to create experiences through his music and the great thing is that you’re invited.

“What sets me apart from other artists is the experience,” proclaims Ansel. “The song is actually the icing on the cake!”
