Bio
My lyrics are the result of compulsion - forces of compulsion. They are almost always about love and nature, about how what's inside reflects or defies the outside - and sometimes the other way around. I try to imagine these two modes of energy striving for union but something or someone gets in the way, giving the lyrics an edge - or a seam. Silence enters people, not just surrounds. Love is an inner sky over head.
How do I work? The tension between the human and the natural drives me to write poem after poem – and then my wife, Kathleen O’Sullivan, an accomplished pianist and songwriter, steals one or two and writes a song. Months later - sometimes years - I hear her sing some tune and ask, "Great melody, but the lyrics..." So the whole process stirs me up again, a double transformation of rapture to rupture and, if I get lucky, back again, from feeling to poem, poem to lyrics and then...to someone else's song. That’s the power of love and nature, I guess – try to capture or express either one and they end up blowing you away.
My poems also try to join sound and sense and have found their way into poetry journals - Innisfree Online Poetry Journal, Exquisite Corpse, and Mimesis, the most recent.
