Anthonys performances on the classical guitar are renowned for displaying colour, maturity and a dynamic energy rare on such an instrument. His repertoire includes popular and rhythmic Latin American pieces of Bellenati, Baden-Powell and Piazzolla, and lots of tangos! with Anthony performing colourful works such as those by Brouwer, Houghton and Domeniconi, the audience is captivated by the infinitely rich sounds he produces on the guitar.
Anthony Field studied the guitar at the Canberra School of Music with Tim Kain completing a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours and receiving the award for the Most Outstanding Graduate for 1995 and winning the Canberra School of Music Chamber Music Competition twice. Anthony has also participated in masterclasses with Manuel Barrueco, John Williams, Leo Brouwer, Gordon Crosskey, Stepan Rak David Starobin and others.
In 1996 Anthony studied in England with the aid of a Big Brother Scholarship and following this was appointed to manage the guitar departments of Canberras top two private schools (Canberra Church of England Boys and Girls Grammar Schools) where he established and conducted Canberras only guitar orchestra.
Anthony has won consecutive prizes in the Shell Darwin International Guitar Competition as well as other national competitions. This lead to his first solo CD (nominated for an ARIA award) released with Sonart (formerly Festival/Walsingham) in 1997 which is regularly played on ABC Classic FM and since its international release it has been played on BBC Classic FM in the UK.
Anthony featured in the 1999 Port Fairy Spring Music festival (recorded live by ABC Classic FM) where he premiered Marian Budos Portrait of a Friend written for Anthony himself. Anthony has also recorded works for Naxos Records with soprano Merlyn Quaife and for composer Michael Atkinson. Anthonys adaptiveness and interest in many sorts of music is evident in the diversity of the projects he has undertaken.
Anthony regularly tours Australia and has played in most major guitar festivals in Australia as well being invited to play in Scotland, Slovakia, Germany and the Czech Republic. In 2001 Anthony toured Germany and Slovakia as a soloist and partner in his long term collaboration with flautist Sally Walker, giving concerts in Berlin, Cologne, Kaiserslautern and Bonn.
In 1998 Anthony was appointed Head of Guitar at the Victorian College of the Arts and Lecturer in Guitar at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Music.
