"Anthony Gibney *LIVE* review"

Anthony and band took part in a showcase gig reviewed and endorsed by Ireland's biggest music magazine - Hotpress which took place in Eamon Dorans, Temple Bar, Dublin. Check out the review below:

First on stage was Anthony Gibney. He kicked off with his recent single "STANDING IN THE DARKNESS" which thanks to two musical accomplices, has even more bite live than on disc. Gibney, who is also a terrific guitar player, continues his campaign to prove that songwriters can rock out too. In "NEED" he has a superb ballad with commercial potential, especially Stateside, and likewise the waltzy "TEAR IN THE SKY". He has that edgy cheekiness in his presentation that lifts him above the herd.

"Ritual single review"

Multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gibney‘s debut single "Ritual" is a hard one to pigeon hole. Built around a moody and dark sonic landscape, Gibney arranges the lyrical themes you might expect on a James Blunt record with the guile of Radiohead or a modern day Jeff Buckley. As well as playing guitars and singing Gibney plays bass and piano on the CD.
There are no lofty ideas here, but there is genuine warmth of feeling combined with a musical dexterity that is missing from most of his song-writing contemporaries. Perhaps the line "I am not lost or looking for grace" is a tip of the hat to the aforementioned Buckley. There is some very tasteful use of lead guitar, interlaced vocals and subtle feedback which reward the patient listener and make this song a grower.
Of the two B-Sides, "Spoon" is a bit too sincere for comfort, but the rootsy "Leave Your Sorrow By The Sea" is well worth a listen, although I‘m still trying to figure out the line "keep your anger far from thee", but hey, it‘s the second B-Side. You can pick up a copy of "Ritual" single in Road Records and Tower Records in Dublin. Find out more on www.anthonygibney.com

"Ritual single review"

"Anthony Gibney from Kildare is a truly assured singer and songwriter with a voice that shows influences ranging from Jeff Buckley to Nina Simone. Handling most of the instruments duties himself, on 'Ritual' Gibney delivers a brooding song with his soulful voice and chantlike harmonies in a full-on arrangement. It also has fine guitar work. The slightly longer 'Spoon' is quieter and sparser, but also shows Gibney in full control of his artistry. 'Leave Your Sorrow By The Sea' is a menacing slice of bluesy rock with a literate philosphy in the lyric.
Gibney shapes up like he means business and could be one to watch out for out there."

"Ritual: Single review"

It took a few listens to this single for me to completely fall in love with it, but now that its absorbed, im totally committed to the excellent sound of Anthonys expressive voice and lyrics.
Each song is perfectly constructed, as all of Anthonys work is clearly progressive material.
Oh! Ritual is such an aural experience its creative and impressively catchy.
Spoon is a lot more toned down as the throbbing bass disappears and Anthonys piano playing and smooth voice overtakes and this is where his tremendous, ongoing musical style is released.
Then comes my favourite Leave your sorrow by the sea this is a shockingly sturdy number, that I soulfully enjoy at every listen. There is some intense guitar playing and some awesome piano work by James Quinn. Amazing! - Samantha Kim, Regatta

"Standing in the darkness: single review"

A Dublin singer songwriter and has been on the scene a few years with many bands under his belt this is your classic A+B sided EP “Standing in the darkness” has all the flavors of your pissed up funk rock melodic tune it kicks in with a wicked thumping guitar grooves and smoothes out with a catchy chorus…excellent stuff." - T.Halpin MusicReview - MusicReview

"Standing in the darkness: single review"

Anthony Gibney seems hellbent ondispelling the notion that singer-songwriters only do introspective pieces with acoustic guitars. 'Standing in the darkness' is a tough pop track with a catchy chorus, electric guitar riffs and a tight rythm section. 'Pariah song' ups the tempo and thunders along with pace and style in equal measure. 'We're not there' slows the pace down into ballad mood and is more likely to appeal to radioland. Gibney is a talented writer and singer with wit to avoid the obvious, but without straying far from the beaten track." -Jackie Hayden Hotpress...... - Hotpress

"Standing in the darkness: single review"

"The Kildare man stakes an impressive claim with this debut single. He may be a young Irish male with a guitar - but this ain't no maudlin nu-hippie schlock. 'Standing in the darkness' is an exciting, highly charged, Stevie Ray Vaughan like Blues number, complete with a dirty Sabbath-style riff underlying Gibney's raw, soulful vocal. Great stuff" - Stephen Errity Hotpress - Hotpress
