"ANTHONY NIEVES - ALL THAT I AM - CD REVIEW"

Perth artist Anthony Nieves has been plying his craft as a songwriter and bergeoning live performer in Perth and Fremantle for a couple of years now. A 400-strong audience at the Fly By Night Club recently for his CD launch bears testament to his diligence, something also on display here on said album, "All That I Am".
What Nieves clearly is, is a romantic. The songs on offer are open, almost surprisingly so. From "Autumn Days" (which first appeared as the title track on Nieves' first album release, under the Fluid Ground moniker), to the Eskimo Joe-Meets-Matchbox-20 feel of "The Ride" and the angrier, edgier, "In The Shadows".
The musicality and arrangements on this release are of an impressively high standard, however lyrically Nieves could probably do with being a little less literal. It's one thing penning songs that are universal, another to pen songs that are uncomfortably so. It's the difference between Maroon 5 and Hootie and the Blowfish.
Nieves clearly has a gift that could reach a wide commercial audience. "All That I Am" is only a part of his journey towards it.
